I am on yaz and all of the active pills are the same so I often postpone my periods by skipping the white inactive pills and starting on a new pack of pills and then take the white pills when it is convinient for me to have a period, is this okay first of all?

Secondly, I take my pills at the exact same time every day but I had unprotected sex 3 days before I started my sugar pills, I read that sperm can live up to 5 days, so will I still be protected even though I postponed my period?

Guide

Hello Anonymous,

Welcome to EmpowHER and thank you for your question.

It is advisable to talk with your gynecologist before deciding to delay your menstrual periods by altering how you take Yaz. But, since you have already done it, you have done as recommended which is not taking the white placebo pills from the 4th row and going straight to a new pack.

I did find that in doing this, you can experience light vaginal bleeding while taking the pills of the second pack.

I suggest you contact your gynecologist. Your physician has the knowledge and training to answer your questions.

You may be advised to take a home pregnancy test or have a blood pregnancy test done.

Regards,
Maryann
