Q:

Is this my period?

So I am currently 9 days late for my period but for last last couple of days I've been having a thick brown discharge that keeps getting darker and thicker every day. It looks a lot like old blood. I think the reason why I am late is because around the time when I was due on, I was very stressed. Other than that, the only thing that could be stopping my period is that I got a bit of pc on my butt and had material with Previn in that I had just wiped off me, close to my genitals. I am concerned about this and confused to why I have dark brown thick discharge. Thank you in advance :)

Hi Anon,

Thank you for sharing your question with the EmpowHER community.

Sometimes if your menstrual cycle is late, it will come in the form of brown discharge. Or you might have it at the end of your existing period and can occur if you ovulate in the middle of your menstrual cycle.

Are you experiencing any other symptoms along with the brown discharge? Like pain, discharge that is watery or yellowish, depression, vaginal dryness, pain during intercourse, frequent urination, burning, itching or lost of appetite?

Not all cases of brown discharge are cause for concern. It could be your vagina cleaning itself out. If you are not experiencing any other symptoms and this is your first time experiencing it, the cleaning process is likely the reason.

If you do have additional symptoms, it's best that you see your doctor.

I hope this helps.

Be well,
~Gillette
