New Shoes with GPS help Alzheimer’s Patients

June 28, 2009 - 10:33am 92 reads 1 comments

I saw on CNN that there are new shoes equipped with GPS (Global Positioning System) which will help with Alzheimer’s (dementia) patients. I thought this was a great idea and wanted to share it with the community.

Your loved one with dementia can be monitored 24 hours a day 7 days a week (as long as they are wearing the shoes). They are monitored by computer and it is instant. With the growing number of dementia patients, I thought this was a great idea.

The footwear company Aetrex and the GPS Company GTX Corp collaborated to make this special show that will be retailing at approximately $200 to $300. You can read the full article here http://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/06/10/gps.shoes/index.html.

What do you think about the global positioning shoes? Would you buy these shoes even if not for a dementia patient? Maybe your children?

I was just thinking about this, that it would be a great idea for toddlers...however, paying $200-$300 per show, when children typically outgrow their shoes in, like, a day, would not be money-savvy.

If there were a small chip that could be placed in the shoe, and easily transferred to another shoe, that would be ideal.

I just "googled" this idea, and it seems there was a news article related to GPS chips in children's shoes from 2007, that you can read here. The idea was also thought of, to be put into soldier's boots in combat.

Anyone know why this idea was thought of a year ago, and not yet implemented (or, has it been?)
