Dear Anonymous

Thanks so much for your question and welcome to Empowher!

I am so sorry these spasms are causing such interference in your life - I can imagine how terribly difficult that can be.

Your high blood pressure and headaches are not usually a symptom of your hemifacial spasm, however. Are you taking medication for it? This may be the cause. Please let us know. You may have another underlying condition that needs to be checked into.

We have an extensive page on Hemifacial Spasm that discusses treatments :

"Treatment
Hemifacial spasm is usually a chronic condition. Remission of symptoms, although possible, has only been noted to occur in less than 10% of patients.

Talk with your doctor about the best treatment plan for you. Treatment options include:

Medication
Treatment with carbamazepine is often used initially, with improvement in symptoms in up to half of patients who are treated.

According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), patients of Asian ancestry who have a certain gene, called HLA-B*1502, and take carbamazepine are at risk for dangerous or even fatal skin reactions. If you are of Asian descent, the FDA recommends that you get tested for this gene before taking carbamazepine. If you have been taking this medication for a few months with no skin reactions, then you are at low risk of developing these reactions. Talk to your doctor before stopping this medication. *

Gabapentin and baclofen may also be beneficial for treating hemifacial spasm in some patients.

Botulinum Toxin Injections
Injecting botulinum toxin (ie, Botox) into the affected muscles can stop eyelid spasm for several months. However, these injections must be repeated, usually several times a year.

Surgery
Microvascular decompression surgery, which repositions the blood vessel away from the nerve, is successful in cases of hemifacial spasm in which the cause is suspected to be a blood vessel compressing the facial nerve."

One of Empowher's writers has written an article on this very subjective that I think will help you a lot. You can read the article in it's entirety here : http://www.empowher.com/news/herarticle/2010/03/11/hemifacial-spasm-unco...

Have you considered Botox? All surgeries have risks but surgery for your condition is quite successful. Would either of these treatments be an option for you?

Hi again Anon

I'm not familiar with the medication tagral although it may be a generic name in your country that is not sold in America.

I would certainly not try to argue someone's religious beliefs with them but I don't think God chose this for you - this condition is caused by the compression of facial nerves and is a facial-and-brain condition.

Why are you afraid of taking this surgery in Pakistan? Can you go elsewhere? Can you try the Botox shots? Using homeopathic methods is a good idea but if they are not effective, you may have to return to more mainstream methods. Since these nerve professions cannot be controlled, exercises may not be of much help.

I understand your hesitancy to look for further treatment but try to talk to a health care professional about your options, at the very least. Explain your fears but let it be known that you cannot live with this. You may be able to find a good homeopathic/mainstream combination that works for you.

Of course this is your decision in the end, but sometimes mainstream medical treatments are what a person really needs, even though we'd all prefer the natural route.

Will you have a think about this and let us know what you decide? Or tell you if you'd like us to help you further?

Hi Saba,

Thanks for your question!

When you had the flu, your immune system was low and you also may have been very tired. When our immune systems are weakened, our eyes often twitch.

With regard to why this would happen when you are on your period is a bit of a mystery, unless stress and fatigue are also a factor at that time of the month. Is it, for you?

Saba, are you looking into getting any treatment like I talked about above?

Hi Saba
Good to hear from you again!

That's an interesting comment regarding marriage.

Stress can exacerbate any health condition, including your spasms so the people telling you this have a point.

However - marriage is not a solution to HFC. So no - do not even consider marriage as some kind of treatment plan. Botox is a much better plan and can be quite effective.

Saba, are you stressed about marriage? Do you feel pressured to get married or is it something you want very much for yourself?
