Q:

Is tubal ligation my only option?

Hi. I'm 26, married for 6 years this December. I have a son (3 in February). I never wanted to have kids so did my husband. I tried several hormonal contraceptives but they always have adverse effects so health providers here have decided to stop giving me any kind of hormonal contraceptives. I cannot use the loop because it has some abortive properties and I can't have that for religious purposes. I could stick to the condom and spermicides but I don't have the peace of mind that they are that effective. I have friends whose condoms broke/burst or had some manufacturing defect. I don't ever want to have kids. I live in a developing country where sterilization is not allowed below age 35.
What are my options now?

Guide

Hello Anonymous,

Welcome to EmpowHER and thank you for reaching out to us for suggestions.

Consult your gynecologist, who knows what options are available to you in your native country.

From what you have shared, I would think permanent sterilization is your only option. That includes a tubal ligation for you or a vasectomy for your husband. A vasectomy involves cutting the two tubes called the vas deferens. It prevents sperm from getting into semen.

Regards,
Maryann
