Q:

What is wrong? My period is late, and I'm having pregnancy like symptoms but also menstrual like symptoms and the test was negative!

So usually my period lasts about 5-7 days, if not more depending on the strength of the cycle that month. In September, I had one, and it was only 4 days long, lasting from the 19th to the 22nd, and then it stopped, I felt a sharp pain, and it started again and lasted the rest of that night but was clear by the night of the 23rd. I expected my period this week, it was due seven days ago actually. But, to my surprise, nothing happened!
I thought it was odd to tell about my personal issues, and I'm sorry for the descriptions, but to find out what's wrong, I feel it's best to be honest. For the passed two weeks, my breasts have hurt off and on and my nipples have stayed pointed and very VERY very sensitive, also colored a slight purplish color. Here recently a but at the same time, creamy-thick watery milk like discharge as emerged, but it's only been happening about two days. If I'm very still and don't move, and become relaxed, I can feel cramps, and wetness, like you would when you're on your period, and even when I cough it feels like I'm on my period because I experience the gushing feeling you feel when you are as you cough or sneeze. Again, off and on, but this time not very constant, my lower back with ache like someone has kicked the end of my spine. I've also noticed a change in mood and finding myself to be mad or sad for absolutely no reason at all. I've been bloated and felt tired all at once. I have also received bad headaches and nauseated migraines within an instant. It all sounds like pregnancy symptoms right? Well, I bought a First Response Early Pregnancy test, I tested last night, negative, I tested tonight around 3 am (When I get home from work) and still negative. I don't know what's going on. To fill in some blanks, my boyfriend and I did have sex on my fertile days after my period in September, and days after that leading up to this week. If anyone has any advice, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Hello ConcernedANDConfused,

Thank you for reaching out to us for advice.

Let's start with your menstrual cycle pattern. It sounds like you have a history of irregular periods, which can last five to seven days or longer. What do you mean by "depending on the strength of the cycle that month"?

The menstrual cycle is regulated by a precise balance of hormones. If your periods vary in length, that suggests a hormonal issue. Have you seen a gynecologist about this?

All of the above mentioned symptoms are not signs of early pregnancy. You would only be a few weeks, actually under one month, if indeed you are pregnant. Too early for lactation, or milk expressed from your breasts. Migraines are not a sign of pregnancy and I urge you to see a doctor about this.

Lastly, for the most accurate test result, you need to test using first urine upon waking up. If you work nights and sleep during the day, test when you wake up. That urine is concentrated and gives you the best result.

ConcernedANDConfused, my advice to you is to schedule an appointment with your doctor. In addition to a blood pregnancy test, your doctor can check you out and determine the cause of all your symptoms.

Regards,
Maryann
