“Please remove your head scarf for surgery.” A simple enough request you think. Not so simple if you are a bald woman.
I was set to have arthriscopic surgery to repair a torn meniscus. After being ushered into the pre-op section of my surgical center, I was told to remove my clothing and put on the lovely hospital gown which was carefully laid out for me. I curiously glanced at the “shower cap,” meant to cover one’s hair, and proceeded to put it over my beaubeau. I truly assumed they would never expect me to go into the operating room with a see-through shower cap and needlessly expose my baldness to everyone.
“Rules are rules,” I was told and was asked to remove my beaubeau! Caffeine, food and water deprivation set the stage for a potential confrontation. With my eyes locked and loaded - the nurse went scurrying for an exception to the rule.
Yes, rules are meant to be broken - the beaubeau prevailed - exposed bald head denied. Just another day in the life of a bald woman.
