Dr. Reitzel:

Epidurals are used throughout the hospital. Epidurals are wonderful tools for people who have had thoracotomies, which means they have had lung surgeries.

Any time you have somebody who has had a broken hip or a broken knee, broken femur, along those lines, orthopedic procedures, we commonly use a lot of epidurals.

The advantage to the epidural is that it allows us to give a continuous stream of medicine without sedating the patient and that’s the main reason why we use that.
