Male Breast Reduction Using tumescent liposuction

By February 25, 2013 - 12:07am

We normally perform tumescent liposuction for removal of unwanted fat from the body, and the same can be performed for male breast reduction as well. Tumescent liposuction is a safe and effective way to get rid of fat from unwanted areas of the body. It is generally done on areas of the body which are out of proportion from the rest of your body and need contouring, in this the chest. Liposuction is done under local anesthesia along with intravenous sedation to keep the patient comfortable and absolutely pain free during the procedure. We do not perform the procedure under general anesthesia as it entails risks. It is performed as an outpatient/ daycare surgery meaning that there is no requirement for hospitalization and the patient goes home after a few hours. The actual surgery time varies between 45 minutes to an hour. There is no particular bed rest advised post surgically and the patient can resume daily activities the very next day. Professionals can go back to work anywhere between 1 to 6 days following the surgery. There are no cuts, stitches or scars after the surgery. The patient has to wear a compression garment/belt/vest post surgically for 6 weeks. First three weeks 24 hours a day and then 12 hours a day for the next three weeks. The patient experiences bruising and swelling after the surgery which subsides in the next 2 to 3 weeks. Results are apparent in the next few weeks but the final outcome is seen at 6months. There are no major complications associated with this form of liposuction. The cost of the procedure varies between Rs. 90,000 - Rs. 120,000 and the final cost can only be advised after full examination.

If the patient has predominantly glandular tissue in the breast not fatty tissue then he will not benefit from liposuction. These patients are candidates for surgical excision of the glandular tissue.

Description

What is Gynaecomastia and Pseudogynaecomastia? Gynaecomastia also spelled as Gynecomastia is an enlargement of glandular breast tissue in males. Usually, it is a common but non-dangerous condition. Normally boys experience growth of their breast tissue at adolescence as a result of pubertal hormonal changes. 75% of these patients require no treatment and will normalize within 02 years. If the condition persists and associated with other signs and symptoms then proper hormonal evaluation has to be performed in order to rule out any underlying abnormality. The second most common cause of Gynaecomastia in males is the decline of testosterone levels with advancing age. Other causes include drugs and metabolic disorders. Pseudogynaecomastia is an increase in the male breast size as a result of accumulation of Fatty tissue and not because of Glandular tissue. This condition is usually not associated with any underlying abnormality. Gynaecomastia associated with underlying hormonal imbalance has to be diagnosed first and then treated accordingly. Normally the breast has two kinds of tissues. One is fatty tissue and the other is glandular tissue. If the breast has pre-dominantly fatty tissue then the patient greatly benefits having liposuction done from the area. If the ratio of glandular tissue is more than the fat, then it has to be surgically removed. Before we plan the surgery, we have certain hormonal tests and a breast / chest ultrasound done in order to determine the amount of fat and evaluation of hormonal status. We also take second opinion from an Endocrinologist (hormones specialist) for proper diagnosis. The Endocrinologist after taking proper history, performing a through physical examination and reviewing the investigations, determines if we are on right track. Once he Okays that the patient will benefit from the liposuction we go ahead with the procedure.
