Perimeno or something else?

By October 7, 2014 - 3:07pm

Hello everyone. Newby to group. Im turning 49 in two weeks and for the past 7 months Ive been suffering from incredibly irregular cycles. I know its supposed to happen at one time or another but I was caught a little off guard since my cycles had been pretty regular until then. My dh and I had been ttc since 2005 and stopped actively trying in 2012. I was able to conceive several times but they ended up in chemicals-m/c. Ive had surgeries for endometriosis, polyps and fibroids. But have not had any problems since having those surgeries. My cycles have gradually become irregular for the past 5 or so years but nothing erratic. I went from having near picture perfect cycles of 28 days to little by little moving a few days early or late. Still, they were 'manageable' In July of 2012 I had a chemical and after that I started having anovulatory cycles. My ob put me on Provera. That helped get my cycle to start again one time. After that I started taking Fertilaid and Ovaboost. When I got started on them, I guess while my body was trying to adjust to them, I bled for 17 straight days. Mostly light, with about 4 days of med flow and two of heavy. But after that it was as if my cycle got 'fixed' and the next 13 months were perfect. Cycles around 29-32 days and O around day 14. That stopped March of this year. I got my last 'normal' period that month. Since I wasn't expecting to start menopause anytime soon, when cd40 arrived but AF did not I tested to see if I was pg. Well, I wasn't. I got my period on cd46 and that was the start of my new normal. Next cycle was 24 days, next one 28 but bleeding for ten days, next one 28 days but bled for 3 days, then when I got it again in July bled for 17 days. Well, more like, I had my 3-5 day period, then nothing then bled again till cd17. That cycle lasted 49 days. Then AF arrived with a vengeance but lasted only 3 days (very heavy) That cycle was 34 days and now, my new one is still going. Been bleeding for 14 days (some times light, most times medium flow) So. I know this isn't menopause or the monster would be gone. However...is THIS what perimenopause is supposed to be like or should I go see a doctor now? I am not interested in HRT. I take Fertilaid (which is basically a multivitamin with Vitex, and which I credit with having ward-off nightsweats and hotflashes - they are pretty much but gone now thank God!) , Ovaboost & Myoinositol- which help me sleep like a baby, COQ10, Omega 3, Vit C, Vit D3, Vit E, Cholesterol Reduction Complex, B-100 and Im sure there's more where that came from I just cant remember....which Im sure you all understand since fog is apparently another symptom of this madness :/ Thanks for ANY help you can give me.

Hi notreadyforthis

Thanks for your post!

You are in menopause when you haven't had a period for 12 months. But it's very likely that you are in perimenopause.

Symptoms are similar to that of menopause, but with periods. And these periods can be irregular, very heavy or very light. It all depends on the woman.

At 49, your chances of pregnancy are very slim (or keeping a pregnancy), but keep trying if you are ok with that.

Menopause and perimenopause are natural cycles of life that don't need doctors but some people have very severe symptoms. Yours sound pretty bad. One way to control the bleeding is to go on birth control but of course that will stop any chance of pregnancy. Natural conception at 49 is rare, that is something to bear in mind. Would you consider IVF?

Thanks for the tip on Vitex, also - something to bear in mind when it's "my time".

Since you're going through a lot with a lot of bleeding, it might be a good idea to see a doctor. All these bleeding could lead to anemia which can be quite serious.

Also, go into our Menopause section and check out the natural options for treating these uncomfortable side effects too.

Keep us posted!
