Dr. Harness, M.D.:
If you are doing mastectomy without reconstruction, there is no point in leaving the nipple or areolar complex behind. You want to try and maximize the amount of skin you take off so that, again, the skin is down flat against the chest wall so that a prosthesis, either inside the bra or stuck on the chest wall, can fit properly. So no, there is no point in leaving the nipple-areolar area behind.

Recognized nationally and internationally for his work in breast and endocrine surgery, Dr. Harness is the immediate past-President of The American Society of Breast Surgeons and is President-elect of Breast Surgery International.
