Dr. Harness explains how breast cancer is diagnosed.

Dr. Harness, M.D.:
Really important in diagnosing someone with breast cancer of course are mammograms. The best mammograms today are digital mammograms. If an abnormality is found with a digital mammogram, typically that’s combined with an ultrasound. If a mass is seen with the ultrasound, then typically ultrasound can be used to guide a needle or referred to as a core biopsy. Patient should not have an open excisional biopsy simply to make a diagnosis.

And then added in to the diagnostic process now more and more is breast MRI, once the diagnosis is established to try and see the extent of the disease and to see if the other breast is involved and things of that sort.

Dr. Jay Harness, M.D., is the Director at St. Joseph Hospital Comprehensive Breast Center. Practicing medicine for 35 years, Dr. Harness specializes in general surgery and medical oncology. Graduating medical school from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, he conducting his internship and residency at the University of Michigan Medical Center. Recognized nationally and internationally for his work in breast and endocrine surgery, Dr. Harness is the immediate past-President of The American Society of Breast Surgeons and is President-elect of Breast Surgery International. Dr. Harness can assist patients in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese.
