Dr. Harness describes breast cancer.

Dr. Harness, M.D.:
How do you define breast cancer? Well, cancer is an abnormal growth of cells. We’ve called them immortal cells, particularly if they get elsewhere in the body that they are not supposed to be. And so of all the cancers the body is affected by, breast cancer is the most common in women.

And there are several kinds of breast cancer, but most importantly to our listeners and viewers, cancer can either be confined inside the ductile system, called in situ cancer, or once it grows through the walls of the ductile system, it becomes an invasive cancer and potentially a threat to a patient’s life.

Dr. Jay Harness, M.D., is the Director at St. Joseph Hospital Comprehensive Breast Center. Practicing medicine for 35 years, Dr. Harness specializes in general surgery and medical oncology. Graduating medical school from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, he conducting his internship and residency at the University of Michigan Medical Center. Recognized nationally and internationally for his work in breast and endocrine surgery, Dr. Harness is the immediate past-President of The American Society of Breast Surgeons and is President-elect of Breast Surgery International. Dr. Harness can assist patients in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese.
