Dr. Harness, M.D.:
Well, first of all there may no warning signs of breast cancer, which is the most important reason that women should follow the guidelines of the American Cancer Society to have mammograms done on a yearly basis, beginning at age 40. And particularly the in situ, the kind that hasn’t grown outside the walls of the ducts, may have no signs at all and can be picked up on screening mammograms.

There’s a galaxy of findings in breast cancer, not the least of which could be a lump that a patient feels in her breast, the skin sort of being pulled in, including the nipple being pulled in, things of that sort. Interestingly, pain is usually not associated with breast cancer, and I see women all the time who are complaining of breast pain. And I know their number one worry is that they have cancer, and greater than 95 to 99 percent of the time they certainly don’t.
