Dr. Harness, M.D.:
The complications following double mastectomy are the typical complications after any surgical procedure. Is there is unusual swelling of the area, meaning fluid is building up. Is there unusual redness of the skin, patient may or may not be on antibiotics. Obviously there are drains in. Is there an unusual amount of blood coming out? The drains will usually change the color of the drainage from red to more of a yellowish color down the road.

So common sense really prevails here. Obviously, if you’re at home and having temperatures or things like that, you want to seek medical advice immediately.
