Dr. Harness, M.D.:
The treatments for invasive lobular carcinomas are virtually identical to the treatment of invasive ductile carcinoma. In other words, breast conservation works there, and obviously mastectomy works there. Again, there are a variety of types of invasive lobular carcinomas, but here we think that breast MRI is important to try and determine the extent of disease.

One of the difficulties in doing breast conservation lumpectomy with invasive lobular is we get out what we think is a cancerous lump which we have, but because of those fine little tentacles of the way the cancer grows in the breast, the margins around the main tumor are positive. You have to take more, and sometimes we have to stop and eventually remove the whole breast, simply because of the pattern in the way it grows.
