Dr. Scherwitz:
Supplements are to supplement a good diet. They shouldn’t be considered to fill in all the holes with a for poor diet. So, yes they can be part of the program, but by themselves probably do not reverse heart disease. However, if one needs, I do think supplements are a good idea and to take multivitamin and antioxidants twice a day, fish oil is a great supplement for the heart and pharmaceutical grade fish oil with a high level of omega-3 versus omega-6 and so, there are various other supplements that can do a variety of things depending on what your risk factors are.

Larry W. Scherwitz, PhD, is a leader in the field of behavioral medicine research with 25 years experience in developing and testing approaches to managing chronic disease with lifestyle changes. Dr. Scherwitz has been on the faculty of various medical institutions including Baylor College of Medicine, University of California at San Francisco, California Pacific Medical Center, and the Preventive Medicine Research Institute.
