Dr. Raiszadeh:
Sciatica is, by definition, the sciatic nerve is the nerve that comes out of your spine, and it goes down to your legs. So the sciatic nerve is usually a combination of L3, L4, L5 and S1 nerves, and all those nerves originate from your back.

So when a person says, “I have a lot of sciatic symptoms,” that means that nerve, one of the nerves, usually it’s one nerve, so L5 nerve, S1 nerve, is being pinched in your back that is going down your leg. So that nerve that originates from the back, that it’s most likely the disc is popped out, pressing on that nerve, on that sciatic nerve, and that’s what’s causing the nerve, that’s what’s causing the pain down the leg. So sciatica refers to pain that runs down your leg.
