Dr. Cannada shares which arthritis medications women should take to treat arthritis.

Dr. Cannada:
There is anti-inflammatories. Arthritis is an inflammatory condition so medications, if your stomach can tolerate, such as Motrin, Advil, you know, Motrin is also known as ibuprofen. Naprosyn is known as Aleve – these are over-the-counter medicines. You don’t need to bother brand; you can just buy the generic and what you are taking is an anti-inflammatory agent.

In order to really be effective if you just take it once it’s not going to solve your chronic pain from arthritis. Some people with severe arthritis are required to take it on a regular basis to minimize their pain.

Dr. Lisa K. Cannada, M.D., is an orthopaedic trauma surgeon with an extensive background in teaching and orthopaedic trauma surgery. She completed her medical school at University of Maryland in 1996 and entered her residency at University Hospitals of Cleveland. She came back to Maryland for her trauma fellowship at the RA Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Maryland.

She worked at Grady Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia for three years before accepting a position at the University of Texas-Southwestern. She truly loves her career as an orthopaedic trauma surgeon and is a strong advocate for Women in Orthopaedic Surgery.
