100-Calorie Snack Packs

July 6, 2009 - 7:53am 248 reads 5 comments

One of the lectures I went to at the ACSM conference was about snacking. The entire time I was thinking about Fit Diva Jill because the speaker was totally dogging the 100-calorie snack packs and Jill is also not a fan of the 100-calorie snack packs. Why? Because they are full of empty calories.

If you want a good snack, try choosing foods that have more nutrients, such as yogurt or a piece of fruit with a few almonds. The other problem with the snack packs are people tend to eat more than one pack, which defeats the purpose.

I agree!

While the 100 calorie snack packs are ok if a person wants to treat themselves to a little junk now and again, they're not great as a daily snack - fruit is a lot better, as are nuts.

My problem with nuts is that I like them so much that a 'handful' just doesn't cut it with me and I end up gobbling down more almonds or walnuts than I should. What's worse is that I end up spending another half hour picking them out of my braces!

It's amazing what comes in 100 calorie packs, now, including Fig Newtons and popcorn. I think it's so true, though, that people can trick themselves into thinking it's okay to indulge a little more than usual because, after all, each pack is "only 100 calories."

Right.

Well, I'm with you on preferring fruit, or even raw veggies with humus, to the snack packs.

P.S. To Susan - BTDT with my braces, my vice was popcorn, lol!

I agree.Although I think that the 100 calorie snack packs were created mainly for the person who is dieting and can't seem to kick their junk food habit. Rather than to "relapse" into a junk food binge, the snack option is available.

Yes, they are empty calories-- but some people just cannot force themselves to have an apple (or raw veggies with humus, hehe). Unfortunately it's difficult to kick the poor eating habits and adapt new ones. But I'd rather see the person who every so often indulges in 100 calorie snack packs than the one who binge eats and is 100 lbs overweight. Empty calories or not, it is still a preferable choice to what could potentially be a nasty diet relapse.

I agree that the 100 calorie snack pack is just a waste of calories.

I hope this is helpful.
