Registered Dietitian Donna Simon describes the nutrition and supplement plan you will follow after bariatric surgery. Donna Simon is Bariatric Coordinator and Nutrition Specialist at Banner Gateway Medical Center in Gilbert, Arizona.

Donna Simon, M.S., R.D.:
Mainly the multivitamins and just a high potency vitamin for a LAP-BAND®. If it’s a gastric bypass they do need a bariatric-specific vitamin.

There’s numerous ones in the market. It would be a multivitamin over-the-counter chewable or liquid available in any vitamin shop or health food store.

Or for gastric bypass it is bariatric and most of them are available online.

Calcium, we recommend anybody between 12 and 1500 milligrams. Then we have our B12 which is sublingual which is the best absorbed and then just our thiamine. Those are mainly required after surgery.

Diet is just eating healthy or making behavior changes, you know, eating three meals a day, not skipping breakfast, making sure you are drinking enough water that you are getting plenty of sleep.

Those are just the general guidelines that we give all our patients, especially the women that they are getting exercise. Exercise is very important.

If you don’t start any of these processes before the surgery the chances of you following through with them after surgery are falling short. So we encourage them just to start a healthy lifestyle since their initial assessment with me.
