Registered Dietitian Donna Simon shares how you can estimate food portion size without a scale. Donna Simon is Bariatric Coordinator and Nutrition Specialist at Banner Gateway Medical Center in Gilbert, Arizona.
Donna Simon, M.S., R.D.:
When it comes to a protein portion, what I try to teach my patients because they are not going to carry around scales and measuring cups, is if it’s a size of a deck of cards, that’s approximately three ounces.
That’s a good portion for a woman. If it’s a half a cup of fruits or vegetables it fits in the palm of your hand or the size of a baseball.
People can really identify with material things instead of weighing three ounces out or doing a measuring cup type of measuring of foods.
So if you use your visualizer, we have a whole handout that we utilize for our patients that we give out.
One ounce is a domino cube, you know, and most patients we say one to two ounces to begin with, work your way up to the three to four ounces.
So they know to do four domino cubes and they can visualize what a domino cube looks like.
