Donna Simon, M.S., R.D.:
Two weeks before what women should have, first of all they need to start their multivitamin.

They need to be chewable liquid for a LAP-BAND® over-the-counter is fine. If it’s specific for a gastric bypass they need a bariatric-specific vitamin that has the extra vitamin A, folate, B12 and calcium.

In addition to that they need to take extra calcium; they need to take B12 and thiamine. And all vitamins need to be chewable or liquid.

Mainly women, for their calcium intake we, even though it’s in a bariatric vitamin we do require them to take extra calcium.

Their diet will consist of four protein shakes and four protein shakes could be any type of shake that they find palatable as long as it’s at least 20 grams of protein and as low calorie as possible they can find something under 150 calories, that’s what we are happy with.

Four protein shakes required everyday with unlimited volume of liquids – clear liquids. They require the four-protein shakes to get to be in the best optimum nutritional status for surgery.

But the clear liquid is to shrink your liver that is sitting on top of your stomach, which is held up during the surgeries. That’s the main reason for the clear liquid diet.
