Could I be Pregnant? Or is my stress getting the best of me?

My last period was on December 20th and I had unprotected sex on the 25th of December (between the hours of 2 AM to 3 AM possibly) and the gentlemen had ejaculated inside me. On the December 26th, I had went to the pharmacy and bought Plan B: One-Step and took the pill around noon that day.

My periods are regular for the most part and if I'm correct, I should have started on time on the 17th of January. Today is the 23rd and still no sign of it. I took a home pregnancy test on the 18th and it said "Not Pregnant". I know now that there is the possiblity of a "false negative" so I'll be taking another test tomorrow as it will have already been a week since my missed period.

This whole month I have been fine. I had no side effects from the pill whatsoever. Maybe a little more tired than usual but I saw that to be from the hours I've been sleeping (Sleeping around 3 AM and waking up at 8 AM). The only other thing was that my nipples were more sensitive than usual at the beginning of the month. I hadn't neccessarily been worried around being pregnant until this past week.

I don't know if maybe I'm just being overly paranoid now due to conversations I'm having with people or the articles and reviews I've been reading online. But I'm also very stressed about the fact that I'm currently uninsured and if I am actually pregnant, I have no idea what I'll do. I'm only 19 and on minimum wage in Southern California.

Any shed of light on this situation would be much appericiated.

Here is an update as to how everything is so far.

Yesterday (February 22nd) I got 2nd my period since taking Plan B in late December. Its a normal heavy flow to what I'm use to so looks like everything is going back to normal now. 3 days earlier than I expected but thats okay.

I was really happy to have this second period reinforcing me that I wasn't pregnant (due to the fact that my first priod was so light that I was scared that I was just spotting, even though all the hpt tests claimed negative).

I haven't had sex since this incident happened and I probably won't be intimate with a man anytime soon because I'm trying to learn how to be happy with myself rather than finding my happiness in a man. Life just doesn't work that way.

I was so ready to please a man so he would stay with me but I've learned that he has to be mutual. So, I'm gonna let my self rest from male companionship and just be happy with what I have around me at the moment. :)

I just want thank both of you ladies, Missie and Alisson, for answering my questions when I needed it most.

Thank you again.

Thank you for your update...I'm happy to hear that your period started, and that you sound like you are becoming even emotionally healthier from this experience, too!

We would love to hear from you again, and it is important for everyone to find what makes them happy within themselves.

Thank you for your hasty response (This is my screen name by the way). Well as I wrote in my question, I said I took the pregnancy test on January 18th, which would have been the 30th day.

Isn't a normal cycle every 28 days?

But as of today, my 36th day, I took another pregnancy test the moment I woke up and it still says "Not Pregnant".

I suppose I'm just concerned because on the customer reviews I read on Plan B: One Step, most of the women experienced their periods much earlier than normal. And of course, there were those that even though the women took the pill within the set time, they still got pregnant.

Is it normal to be more than a week late after using Plan B?

Hi Renee,
A normal cycle for most women is between 21-35 days. It is also normal for some women to completely miss a period.

Since your test results have been confirmed as "not pregnant" (home pregnancy tests are about 99% accurate after a missed period), you can begin looking at other possible reasons for a late/missed period.

To answer your previous questions:
- Plan B does not "mess up" your system with hormones. It is a "mega dose" of hormones, but the same hormones found in birth control pills.
- Plan B can cause a delay in a period, or an earlier period. You are right that most women experience this lateness or delay as about a week.
- All women's bodies are different, and if you are not experiencing any other symptoms, you may have a late or missed period due to stress or other "unknown" reason
- It is very common for women to miss a period; in fact, it is not a medical concern (in the absence of other conditions and symtpoms) until you miss THREE consecutive periods
- Plan B does not cause any iron deficiencies; what leads to a deficiency is loss of blood (not the absence) and not consuming enough foods that contain iron, or are fortified with iron.

It does sound like you were experiencing a light period, and it may be a "different" period this cycle than your normal period. That is OK. Of course, if you are still concerned, please call your doctor for the peace of mind!

Hi Anonymous,
Thank you for your question. My first thought is that your last period was on December 20th and you took a pregnancy test on January 17th. not even 30 days.

After taking Plan B, there is definitely a period of time which is usually a couple months where you may experience irregular periods which is common. I would wait, if I were you, for a week or so to see if your period comes before trying to take another pregnancy test. It may just be stress related as to why your missing your period. Can you keep us updated?

Good Luck,

Here's an update as of today, February 1st.

So its officially 2 weeks since my missed period and 44 days since my last normal cycle.

I took another pregnancy test this morning and yet again, NEGATIVE! Sorry for the excitement, its been a stressful month all together. Haha.

But, as of Saturday, January 29th, I've started experiencing spottting and still going through what seems to be an extremely light period. I suppose that's a good sign due to that fact that I'm still getting "not pregnate" results on the pregnancy tests.

In 2009, I use to donate a lot of blood and many times, I was rejected due to "too low" of iron in my blood. Back then I was taking iron supplements but its almost more than a year that I stopped taking them.

I've been doing research and I was wondering, would it be possible that I'm going through an iron deficiency and that is why my period has been so late (other than Plan B messing around with my hormones and my stress on top of that)? Is there anything in Plan B that lowers the iron in blood?

In this past month, the only thing I've really been experiencing is fatigue. In this past week, I've been feeling more tired than usual and I wake up feeling very sore from my shoulders and arms.

I know the best thing would be to go to a doctor but I can't because of my lack of insurance.

Anyways, I hope to hear your thoughts again on this situation soon.
