A companion was as of late prescribed antibiotics for a urinary tract infection (UTI). She is taking the Pill yet her doctor said she didn't have to play it safe because of the antibiotics. Is it safe to say that her doctor is right?

Guide

Hello amson00 . Thank you for posting.

It depends on your doctor. To date, the only antibiotic proven to impact birth control pills is rifampin. This drug is used to treat tuberculosis and other bacterial infections. If you take this medication while using birth control pills, it decreases the hormone levels in your birth control pills. However, if the antibiotics (or the illness) they are treating cause diarrhea or vomiting, absorption of the contraceptive pill may be affected. In that case, a backup birth control method is a good idea. Some doctors will recommend this anyway when prescribing antibiotics just to be on the safe side. Your pharmacist can tell you more.
