Q:

Does anyone else sneeze after eating mints?

With near predictability I sneeze following the intake of mint whether it's gum, a breath mint, Listerine breath strips, or something else. I've now come to refer to these items as Sneezey Treats. Following the two sneezes, there are no other symptoms. I don't break out in hives, no watery eyes, nothing.

Anyone else got this going on? I obviously don't need to rush to the emergency room and the solution is even more obvious -- stop consuming this stuff, right -- but am looking for fellow MSPs -- or mint sensitive people. Any out there?

I also do this--my best friend used to always try to get me to eat Altoids just to see me sneeze three times in a row! Dark chocolate will also trigger a sneeze sometimes, but only if it's fairly strong & bitter. Weird, huh?

No problems with mouthwash, toothpaste, or menthol-free mints.

I always sneeze twice upon eating mints or gum or anything containing menthol. No other symptoms either. A curious phenomenon.

I have sneezed when I eat mints ever since I can remember. I used to tell my mum that I did and she didn't believe me until one day I said it in front of my old head teacher and she said the same thing happens with her. I have found my nose is getting progressively worse and worse throughout the years. It is now getting to the point where I am thinking about going to the doctors over it. I can sneeze up to ten times when eating a mint. I can also do the same without eating anything now! I have such a sensitive nose!!! If I am taking anti-histamines for hayfever even they dont stop it!!!

I sneeze with mints and cough syrup.
I think its just a sensitive nose.

I also have a deviated septum sp?
only one nostril works well at a time, and it switches back and forth.
I don't think its related to the mints though.

hahahaah so im not the only one! this has been happening for about 3 years now, and my dad has the same thing - whenever I (or my dad) chews on a fresh STRONG mint chewing gum (like those "EXTRA WHITES"), once that mint rush comes in, its followed by 2 or 3 really strong sneezes! and that's it LOL... for the rest of the day, if i chew a new piece of gum, nothing.

funny thing happened the other week though, which is what led me to looking this whole thing up... i got a new brand of mouthwash, a colgate mint one.

i've never used it before, put it in my mouth, started to swish and gargle, and the next thing i knew, an UNCONTROLLABLE MASSIVE SNEEZE ERUPTED, resulting in this mouthwash SPRAYING ALL OVER my bathroom mirror, bench and sink!!.. :-(

my girlfriend was crying she was laughing so hard!

but the same effect slowly died down after a couple of uses...

this isnt uncomman at all, a lot of people have this
'the sneeze reflex can be brought on by a sudden inhaling of cold air or a strong flavor such as a strong mint gum. This implies an overstimulation of any nerve close to the trigeminal nerve can cause the sneeze reflex.'
it can happen with a strong flovour of anything, everyone's different. Very dark, bitter chocolate also makes me sneeze xD
i like it :)

haha i literally did not know other people have this. I sneeze when eating chewing gum - but its not something i'd stop eating it for, it's just a sneeze or two, doesn't bother me!! but it is without fail. I get laughed at too and people call them chewing gum sneezes haha. Also sunlight and bright lights make me sneeze- i dont think that will be related, but anyone have BOTH like me? Sensitive noses... Also have a really sensitive sense of smell ..
