Q:

Hello everyone! This morning I was walking with my dog through the forest, and was sprinting fairly quickly when I twisted my ankle (I think) on a tree root. It has now been around (?) an hour since the accident, but I still cannot walk on that foot as it

is too painful. However, the foot is not bruised nor swollen (there may be minor swelling but too little to be treated as a serious case. I am not sure what to do as I want to get on my feet as soon as possible but want to avoid going to the doctor for something as unserious as what I have.

Thanks! :)

Hello Anon
Thank you for writing and I'm sorry about your fall.
If there is no bruising or swelling you may not have a break (only scans can confirm this). What you may have is a sprain which can be just as painful as a break and can cause so much pain, a person cannot walk on the affected area. Ankles are susceptible to sprains when there is a fall or a twist.
Since we can't tell you what exactly is wrong, we can tell you a few things. Stop trying to walk on the affected ankle - you will do more harm than good. Rest and elevate the area. Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory that can help with pain.

A aircast may be a good idea - a drug store can provide these, or Amazon if you have the 2-day shipping option. I think the price runs from $40-$70.

If you still cannot walk in a few days, consider at least calling a doctor for advice.
I know how painful these things are - I hope you feel better soon.

Best,
Susan
