Hello, Im not sure if my periods are irregular or not but I am able to give you this information. My last three period were Sept 4, October 1, and October 25th. How many days are between theses cycles, and should I use 28 days as a regular cycle. Anyway I had intercourse with my boyfriend on Nov 4, 2009 I s it a possibility that I may be pregnant? I m not really sure. I ve had sore nipples only, no breast enlargement, no hurting of the entire breast, light nausea (no vomiting)

It is confusing to know your cycle length..until you know the secret! :-)

1. Count the first day of your period/bleeding as "day 1"
2. Count each day following (bleeding or not) consecutively, until your next period.
3. Your next period/bleeding day is your new "day 1".
4. The number you reached the day-before your new "day 1" is cycle length.
This makes more sense when you get out a calendar, and write it out...then it is easy!

For example, your period on Sept 4th ("day 1") and next period started Oct 1:
Count from "day 1" through to your next period, and you have 27 days in-between periods, or "cycle length".

Your cycle lengths have been:
27 days (from Sept 4 to the day-before next period on Oct 1)
24 days (from Oct 1 to the day-before next period on Oct 25)
going on 26 days (from Oct 25 to today, Nov 19...but you haven't started yet)

Rarely does a woman have a cycle length that is exactly the same each month, and the range for a normal cycle length is between 21-35 days.

I assume you had unprotected sex on Nov 4th (no condom or hormonal contraceptive, like the pill), and that's why you are worried about pregnancy?

The only sign of pregnancy that you will notice is a missed period, and at that time, you can take a home pregnancy test. Taking this test sooner will not provide accurate results, so unfortunately, the only thing you can do right now is wait! Many women in your shoes will second-guess every symptom, but the early pregnancy symptoms are so vague---they could be anything and also are the same as an upcoming period (makes sense, since they are both hormone-related).

Are you planning to have sex again with your boyfriend, and if so, can you talk with him about what type of pregnancy-prevention methods you would both like to use? you have many options, and we are here to help with any questions or concerns you have!

In the meantime, you can wait until "day 27" of this cycle (Nov 20th), or a few days afterwards, around "day 30" (Nov 23) to take a home pregnancy test if your period has not started. You do have a chance of pregnancy any time you have unprotected sex, so to answer your question---yes, there is a possibility. But again, the symptoms you experience won't be the answer, only a period (or missed period) and a home pregnancy test.

Be sure to talk with your boyfriend or gynecologist about birth control options, so you do not have to go through the stress of worrying next time!!!

Hi, Anon, and thank you for your question.

Our periods can be late for a number of reasons. Since you have used a condom and have had a negative pregnancy test, try not to worry quite as much. If you have been under a lot of stress lately, that can affect your cycle. Exercise shouldn't affect your cycle EXCEPT since you just started it, if you are doing it a lot it may have an effect.

In general, what causes us to be late is that our hormones get slightly off-balance for one reason or another. Some women even occasionally skip a period. Are you usually very regular? How long ago did you take the pregnancy test?

Anon,
I'm not sure I understand. You had a period on September 27? if that is the case, wouldn't your next period be due in late October? Or is what you mean to say that you SHOULD have started your period on Sept. 27?

If you should have started your period on Sept. 27, unprotected sex on the 24th should not have resulted in a pregnancy. But it's always possible. I would suggest waiting four or five more days and taking another pregnancy test if your period doesn't start. If you read the other questions and replies on this thread, you can see how common it is for women to go VERY late and be VERY worried and then get their periods and be fine. But if going to a doctor and having a pregnancy test there would help ease your mind and let you know for sure, please do that, by all means. And don't worry about your exercise, normal exercise for 15 minutes a day is great for you! Don't stop doing that. It'll help relieve your stress, which is really important.
