Q:

I started taking my birth control pills five days after my period?

I ended my period, and was confused about when to start my birth control pills. I started taking them five days after I finished my period. What will this do? 1. Will I still be protected? and 2. Will my next period come as scheduled or will it be late?

Guide

Hello and thank you for sharing your question.

For the future, there should be no break between each pack of pills.  When you end the last pill of one pack, start directly on the next pill the day after.

Since you waited 5 days to start taking the next pack, your hormones will most likely readjust to be in sink with those pill and you will have your period during the last week of pills.  You period may be slightly irregular because the hormones were delayed, but this is no cause of alarm.

You can wait a few days of taking the pill as an extra precaution before having intercourse.
