Q:

Is it normal for my arm muscle in my shoulder to hurt 2 weeks after flu shot?

Pain from flu shot

I was happy to receive the flu shot this year, as I feel like it's "doing my part" to stop the spread of the influenza virus. Plus, any inoculation that can either prevent, or lessen the symptoms, of flu is motivation to me!

I've received the flu shot annually, for the past 10 years. I have the typical soreness at site, possibly a little tired that evening. But that's it.

This year...my shoulder muscle (at the site of the injection) is still painful, so much that I can't move my arm forward at shoulder-level, or lift my arm up over my head, without a sharp pain in that one muscle. If my arm is still, it does not hurt. It is affecting my sleep, as I am confined to sleeping on only my right side (it is my left arm that hurts).

Are there any other reports of this flu shot symptom? Did I just not move my arm enough after the shot (kind of "favored it"), or is there something else wrong??

Well I am happy ti discover I am not alone and delighted to discover that my arm isn't going to atrophy or drop off...it's been 10 weeks since my annual, no problem, pop in and pop out flu shot. Same place I went the previous year-2 days of very sore upper left arm-no big deal-that happens but then the dull internal pain, the tiredness in my left arm when keeping it up for long periods is NOT anything I have ever experienced. I am counting my blessings that I did not have it administered to my right arm (I am right handed). The sheet of paper they send home with you mentions "very rare side effects such as very limited arm movement" and in my case I could move my arm but I was debating on finally seeing my doctor or going back to the clinic. However, after reading many of these comments I am only happy to not be in the same amount of pain as some of you. I will never again be so casual about a vaccine. But like most of you who have experienced a reaction, I will never again get a flu shot-my fear being that another flu vaccine would give me an even worse reaction.

I got my flu shot the 2nd week of October of this year (2014)...it is now the end of December and my arm feels like I have been in a boxing ring with Mike Tyson! I cannot sleep on my left side, cannot reach for things over my head or at a backwards angle or hold heavy things. The pain keeps me up at night and I can touch the sore spot - it is right where the injection was administered. Vicodin doesn't even help! I am left handed so this is particularly difficult for me to get everyday things done. I am at my wits end with this pain and I am beginning to feel like this will last forever! I actually called the pharmacy where I had the flu shot done to ask if it was possible that the tip of the needle broke off in my arm - that's how badly it hurts. All they told me was to take Ibuprofin for muscle inflamation. I guess I will try that but this pain really sucks.

My flu shot (new quad vaccine) was administered on Nov. 3; too high on the shoulder, I think. The normal aches the day of and a few days after were not alarming. The thing is, the pain has never completely gone away, and just yesterday I mentioned to my spouse that my arm felt like I received the shot two days ago. Hence, my research brought me here. Thanks for all of the information and insight. Good luck to all.

I had posted before regarding the flu shot I received 10-21-2014. I too felt the vaccine enter my arm and experienced soreness that escalated over a week's time until I could not move my left arm without pain which was jarring at times and brought me almost to tears. I could not lift my arm to style my hair, apply mascara, take off my coat, etc. I saw my doctor 13 days later. There was no swelling, bruising, or redness at the site of the injection and there never had been. The pain is in my upper arm. not my shoulder. However, on occasion, I do feel some shoulder/neck weariness due to the way I restrict my arm movements. He said I had a deltoid injury (would not conclude the shot had caused it but said since this problem occurred after the shot it could be related) and prescribed prednisone. He said it could be 6 months. That brought almost immediate relief but the pain and limited movement returned when the Rx ran out. He again prescribed another round of prednisone 6 weeks after the flu shot. Again relief for the time on the Rx but pain returning now. Movement in my arm is better than it was when I initially saw him. I try to limit my movement in that arm as much as possible. It feels best when I am taking a hot shower. I call my first visit ground zero for pain and movement. I now feel I am at 20%. I can style hair, take off coat, etc. with pain but not the bring me to my knees pain. I am calling next week to see him again. I have reviewed what others have said their doctor has done so I can take that information with me. Any advice or updates?

Had my MRI on 12-31-14 and it shows something inflamed or irritated with the bursa. My doctor set up an appt. with an ortho doctor which is next week. In the meantime I have been on another round of prednisone 20 mg. daily for a week, then 10 mg daily for a week and then 5 mg daily for a week. Will post after I meet with ortho doctor.

Here is my latest update on my 10=21=14 flu shot. Saw the ortho doctor on 1-19=15. The MRI shows the bone is bruised and the bursa is inflamed. Still having trouble with them agreeing this is from the flu shot. Still getting comments like it could be a coincidence. Although he did say if the needle was too long or they were incompetent it could happen. Started physical therapy the next day. Finished my last round of prednisone this week so I am hoping it doesn't flare back up as it has after the other two rounds I took. The ortho doctor and the physical therapist said due to bone bruise it could take a total of 6 months or more to heal. At this point in time, I would be happy if that is true. The pain is better and I can use my arm but I would like to return to my normal active life I had BEFORE the flu shot. I did complete the adverse reaction form on line just in case.

I have the same problem. I took the flu shot about 7 weeks ago. It was the shot with the four different types of flu mixed together. My left arm is painful on the area of the flu shot. It is getting worse? What did they put in that shot that it is affecting all of us? I hope that this will finally disappear. I am truly worried. Andrea

I have just reported it to the CDC. My story is similar, 2+ months after the flu shot, am still experiencing pain coming from the deltoid muscle especially when raising my arm at a certain upward angles. I have been taking large doses of ibuprofen which have helped manage the pain. (Note: I have slightly elevated blood pressure and the nurse said that ibuprofen will increase blood pressure). The Dr just suggested going to physical therapy, which I decided not to do. The pain is getting slightly better, so hope over time it goes away completely and wishing the same for all of you. Happy Holidays!

Everyone who has shoulder pain after flu shot should read this blog

http://www.amommystory.com/2014/01/went-flu-shot-got-shoulder-injury-instead.html

And Google SIRVA (Shoulder Injury Related to Vaccine Administration).

It may not be the vaccine. You may have had the injection too high and injured your shoulder.

I've posted this information several times in the past, and I'll post it again:

Hello, I wanted to tell you that this year's flu shot may becausing shoulder pain to a number of people, however I received a flu shot three yrs ago and developed the same excruciating pain that most of the writers on this blog discuss. My doctor and I tried a number of treatment modalities however nothing worked.

Finally I found a website : http://vaers.hhs.gov/index

The Dept of Health and Human Services have set up a program, for vaccine suffers who have had symptoms for more then 6months. A claim has to be filed and with verifiable symptoms, (i.e. doctors medical records, diagnostics etc...) for over 6 months, there can be a monetary awarded. There is NOTHING that is going to work for this pain. No one knows how long the pain will last.

My shoulder pain 3yrs later has improved probably by 50% but there are good days and bad.

Every year there are at least 10,000 people that have this same pain from the flu shot. I hope this helps.

and I happen to be a physician (internist) and I have thoroughly researched the flu shot, which I will never get again.
