Q:

Is it normal for my arm muscle in my shoulder to hurt 2 weeks after flu shot?

Pain from flu shot

I was happy to receive the flu shot this year, as I feel like it's "doing my part" to stop the spread of the influenza virus. Plus, any inoculation that can either prevent, or lessen the symptoms, of flu is motivation to me!

I've received the flu shot annually, for the past 10 years. I have the typical soreness at site, possibly a little tired that evening. But that's it.

This year...my shoulder muscle (at the site of the injection) is still painful, so much that I can't move my arm forward at shoulder-level, or lift my arm up over my head, without a sharp pain in that one muscle. If my arm is still, it does not hurt. It is affecting my sleep, as I am confined to sleeping on only my right side (it is my left arm that hurts).

Are there any other reports of this flu shot symptom? Did I just not move my arm enough after the shot (kind of "favored it"), or is there something else wrong??

My 1st post was Nov. 1st. I've been to Dr now. He thinks it hit a nerve & put me on prednisone pack that I take like 6 the 1st day & 5next, & so on. I still feel it & still hurts but not like it was & I've been on med 2 days now. We will see how it goes afterwards.

Be sure to go to this website to look into compensation for your injury. http://hrsa.gov/vaccinecompensation/index.html . It is imperative that you keep good records. If you have the sources, be sure to ask your doc for a neuro check up. There is a nerve conduction test, can't remember the name, that should be done in the first 3 months or so. get it done. I still suffer some pain and range issues after mine....Oct of 2009. ..but tons better then it was. Do your research. good luck to all. if you can...read all of the comments on this blog.

I had a flu shot (my first and last one) 6 weeks ago and my arm is still killing me. I can't sleep on that arm and the pain sometimes runs down to my fingers. How could so many have this type of pain and nothing is said about it publicly?

I dont know either but I am so pissed off! I should notify the local news station and see what happens. Maybe others should do the same.

I reached out to my local newspaper. It has been two months now and I still suffer significant pain and loss of range of motion in my left arm.

I also have been in a lot pain since last week after receiving the flu shot at my doctors. First I noticed she also gave it to me awful high up on my arm. Second, I noticed that as soon as she pushed the plunger in, it felt like she shot me with concrete. I said so out loud because it hurt so much and my arm felt heavy.
I too have had flu shots every year for years now and never gave it another thought afterwards but, this one- not at all.
It wakes me up if I lay on it so my sleep has been changed. I can not lift my arm up over my head or keep it up for a any amount of time because it hurts.
After reading here that people are having the same problems it makes me wonder what the hell did they do to us? What was in that shot?

My 1st post was on Nov 19, 2014 after 3 weeks of pain. It has been almost 6 weeks now and finally went to the Doctor. My Doctor said that it seems the shot hit a nerve and he has heard of this before and that pain usually subsides in 8 weeks. If pain does not subside I have to go see a Neurologist!! JUST GREAT! Doctor said its just bad luck that this happened, I too thought the shot was unusually high on the arm this time but he said the location was fine when I showed him where it was administered. So after 6 weeks my arm is slightly better, if that soothes anyone experiencing the same, it still hurts to lift above shoulder height and take off clothing and lift items at times, but a slight improvement.

I got my flu shot Nov 9th @ walgreens. I've never previously gotten it anywhere besides my pcp. Which I've gotten every yr for many many years with never a problem. My arm is in so much pain! The last couple of days it's also moved to my shoulder blade. I cant even wash my hair w/out letting my arm down to rest. Im taking 800 mg of ibuprofen 4 breakfast, lunch & dinner. I sleep with a heating pad every night & I haven't slept for more than 2 hrs at a time. I called walgreens today. The pharmacist said she has heard if you tense up it will hurt more or it may have hit a nerve & caused inflammation or maybe from a previous injury. I told her I have JD & have been giving myself shots since I was 9. I didn't tense up & certainly had no previous injury. I was perfectly fine b4 getting that shot. You can actually still see the spot where I got the shot. I think it was to far up personally. She said I may need a cortisone shot or steroids. I can't take it anymore so I'm making myself an appt 1st thing in am.

I also got my flu shot two or three weeks ago and the lpain usually lasts just that day. I always got mine at cvs and I got mine at cvs this year as well. This is the first time the pain is lasting so long. I'm having the exact pain as everyone else is saying. I can't lift it or sleep on it. When I lift it up to take off my shirt it is so painful I physically cannot do it. I exercise everyday and my arm does ok during the workouts, but it's not stopping the pain. My boyfriend also got his shot with me this year and his arm is fine, but he got a really bad rash in a... Uncomfortable spot. I told my dad about my arm pain and he laughed saying it flu shot pain doesn't last that long. Someone on here said their nurse did the same thing. Did they change the flu vaccine this year? I'm not making up this kind of pain.

So.... me too. I got the shot around November 6th, 2014. It's now 3 weeks later. I wake up with a slightly sore arm every morning and now, today (Nov. 28th), my arm is feeling numb and very uncomfortable.

I got the shot last year and had soreness the day of, but it went away.

I don't know what's going on.
