NuvaRing Pregnancy

I have been on NuvaRing for 2 months now. I took it out on Monday (roughly one week and half weeks ago) which would have been my week 2. I had a little bit of spotting and the blood was dark brown and barely filled a panty liner. I had unprotected sex on Tuesday and Wednesday of the same week. I am 8 days post sex and having some small brown spotting again. My breasts are super tender, i am fatigued, back aches and just feel blah. My period is due this upcoming tuesday.

Could I have ovulated quickly when I removed my NuvaRing? It was week 2, which would have been the middle of my cycle. I intend to take a pregnancy test this weekend. Just curious if the spotting I am experiencing now is due to implantation bleeding.

Guide

Hello Anonymous,

Welcome to EmpowHER. Thank you for reaching out to our community if this was implantation bleeding and if you are pregnant. I will gladly try to help, but consulting your gynecologist and a positive pregnancy test are best sources.

The hormones in NuvaRing are the same hormones as in the birth control pill — estrogen and progestin. The hormones in the ring work by keeping eggs from leaving the ovaries. Pregnancy cannot happen if there is no egg to join with the sperm. The hormones also make cervical mucus thicker. This keeps sperm from getting to the eggs.

In regards to how soon after removal of the NuvaRing can you ovulate, I found physicians consistently stated the ring loses it's efficacy if you have it out for longer than 3 hours at a time.

You can ovulate and become pregnant within two weeks of removing NuvaRing. More commonly, it may take four to six weeks following removal to become pregnant.

Implantation bleeding happens to some women about six to 12 days following conception.
Anonymous, spotting so soon after removal and intercourse might not be implantation bleeding, but rather some shedding of your uterine lining.

Regards,
Maryann
