Venous lake on my lip

I have this dark blue/purple lesion on my lip that keeps getting bigger. I went to see the dermatologist and she said that it's a venous lake. She said it was nothing I had to worry about. Does anyone else have one or know of someone who does? If so, what was your/their treatment?

Thanks to all for the info. I did see a dermatologist who recommended removal with a certain laser (don't remember which laser) however I am scheduled to have the procedure next week. I still don't really understand this whole lip vein thing and had never heard of this before. But oh joy, I have several on my lower lip. Hopefully this treatment will take care of them. Thanks again, very informative.

I now have 3 venous lakes inside my mouth; one on upper lip and two on the bottom. I had a dermatologist try and cauterized them, but he didnt do a very good job since they came back after healing. I would think there MUST be something else to try.....perhaps someone who deals in vein therapies? Any ideas?

You could be biting. yourself while you are asleep. If this is the case and the cause of the venous lakes maybe just a mouth guard would help .

I just had my venous lake treated by a dermatolist in Toronto with the Cutera cool glide. I had previously done IPL but it never worked. I guess you need a laser that goes into a deeper level of the tissue. I am so impressed with how much of the venous lake is already gone. Mine was quite large and on my lower lip. I may need one more treatment in another month or could just fade completely. Did not really hurt and I am very pleased with the results!

I had one procedure of laser done and its so much better but its still there, not as blue but still a bump the I am wondering will be fixed with one more treatment or will I have to do surgery. Oh I am sooo afraid of leaving a scar that will be more noticeable then with what I have now. Hearing stories that their surgery was a success helps but still leaves that small doubt of ''what if mine would fail''. I guess I'll have to go back and see what my doctor says who gave me my laser treatment. - EW

I had a venous lake years ago and it is completely gone. Absolutely no sign of it. I did some research online and chose to find a doctor who used the Cutera laser. This is after my own well known plastic surgeon suggested cutting it out and I said I needed to go home and think about it. Long story short, the doctor with the Cutera laser zapped my lip three times with a very small laser tip and the rest is history. -California Girl

California Girl,
Can you share your doctor's name? I'm trying to find someone who has experience with Venous lakes and the Cutera.
Thank you.

Hi,
I know it's been a while since anyone posted here but I just thought I would add my experience in case it is helpful to people in future. I had quite a big venous lake in the centre of my lower lip. I live in the UK and was refered to a consultant at the hospital by my Dentist. I had previously asked a GP about it but was told that it is just one of those things and nothing they could do so I had lived with it for several years. I went to see the Oral Maxillo-Facial consultant at the hospital and he recommended that I have surgery.
I had the procedure done on the NHS in January and had the stiches removed a week later. The procedure was very quick, less than 30 mins but I did have quite a lot of stiches right down my lip. It is now 5 weeks since the op. It was uncomfortable for a few days but the swelling went down quickly and it was no where near as bad as I was anticipating. It has healed really well and I am so pleased with the result. I do have a scar right down the centre of my lip but you'd really have to look hard to see it and I feel like it is still improving. I'm so pleased I had it done :)
Good luck to everyone having treatment, hope you all get a good result.
Jen

I am the person who wrote in on July 9, 2011 at 5:51. I related the story of my rather large venous lake being removed by the doctor using a cauterization tool instead of the Cutera Cool Glide (this from a doctor who DOES use the Cool Glide laser). He said because mine was so large the cautery tool would be more successful in my case. It has now been 6 weeks since my procedure and I just wanted to give an update. The venous lake is completely gone, and you cannot see ANYTHING on my lip. It is like the venous pool never happened. I am so thrilled. I didn't realize how much I had hated the ugly thing until it was gone. Good luck to everyone else, and thank you to everyone who shared your experiences.

EW- Not sure if size, depth, or placement makes a difference. But if I were you I would inquire about a procedure another person posted here, "lidocaine injection to numb lip then doctor used a electric needle and cauterized the vessel". As far as cutting it out....If it were me, I would just be a little nervous about the scaring that could occur from using a scalpel on my lip. -J
