Q:

What are my chances of getting pregnant if i missed one pill and made it up ASAP?

I missed one pill Thursday night, in my third week, but made it up as soon as i woke up on Friday morning. I also took my pill about 3 hours late on Saturday night, which would have been my last active pill. My boyfriend and I had sex soon after. We used a condom, but it broke. He had already went shortly before we had sex. He went inside of me not knowing the condom broke, but he barely went. What are my chances of getting pregnant?

Hi Anonymous,

You made up for the missed dose correctly. The spotting followed by a little heavier flow may be your period for the month. Consult your physician or ask the pharmacist if changing from the brand name to generic form of the birth control pill that you are taking can cause changes in the menstrual cycle.

Okay that makes me feel better, thanks! I was mostly just worried because I've never not had a period during the inactive week.

And now I'm worried all over again; I have a tendency to over-research things and freak out. Now that I've looked up early pregancy symptoms I noticed that darkened nipples is one, and I just recently noticed that. But I haven't really had any other noticeable symptoms. Do you think that'd be related to pregnancy? Or something else?

Hello Anonymous,
I think your chances are slim. Did you take the missed dose as well as your daily dose? The spotting may be the result of switching brands.

If your period is late beyond one week, take a home pregnancy test.

Maryann,
I take the pills at night, so I took the one from the night before that morning and then another that night. Could spotting and then bleeding a little heavily make me not have a period on the week that I'm supposed to?

I know that missing one pill doesn't usually increase your chances of getting pregnant, but the other day I missed a pill and took it the next morning, probably 10 hours later than I usually would. I have been taking the pill for two straight years now and some on and off before that, but when I missed it was my first month of a more generic brand of the pill I usually take. I started spotting that day, and I had sex without a condom a few hours later. I wouldn't be worried except that my period was supposed to start a day or two ago and it's usually not late on the pill. I'm hoping that this could be because the spotting turned into heavier bleeding and maybe that could be affecting my period? What are my chances of being pregnant?

Hello Anonymous,

I think you are worrying over nothing. Was the pill, which you took on Thursday, the last active pill in the pack? If so, then having intercourse the following night would not put you at risk for becoming pregnant. You had a period, even though the flow was lighter than normal.

Hi there, I take my bcp every night at around 6pm and a few weeks ago I took my last pill of that cycle on the Thursday night. However on the Friday night I had sex with my boyfriend (not the wisest choice) and we used protection. I bled a bit for two days and my period was due to come on Sunday but didn't arrive until Monday night and it was really really light for the full 5 days. Could I be pregnant or am I worrying over nothing? Please help me I'm freaking out!!!! X

Hello Anonymous,

You are as protected against pregnancy as you were when taking your birth control pills regularly. You acted correctly by making up for the missed dose.
