Is it genetic or is it just random?

Hello Carrie,

Thank you for reaching out to us with your question.

The appendix is a small pouch attached to the large intestine. Some researchers and physician think it serves a function as part of the immune system. Others think it is a vestigial organ, which broke down roughage many a millennia ago.

Appendicitis is inflammation of the appendix. Generally the cause is blockage by feces. Left untreated, an inflamed appendix will eventually burst, or perforate, spilling infectious materials into the abdominal cavity.

The chance of developing appendicitis is random.
