I have a lady friend living with me who has been diagnosed with cancer. According to her, her count is 8. What does that mean ?

Anon - I'd like to help you help your friend, but it's really not clear what she has. Do you know if she has stomach cancer or does she have a blood cancer? These are very different. Stomach cancer is also referred to as gastic cancer, and like many other cancers is described in stages, so I'm not understanding what you mean by her "counts." This page provides more information: http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/pdq/treatment/gastric/Patient

In the meantime, I think you probably want to know how you can help your friend as she goes through this. None of us are really trained for this, and it can be awkward and difficult knowing what to do. We have several articles about caregivers on the site, and here are some additional resources to assist you.

Thanks for supporting your friend. We look forward to hearing back from you.
Take care,
Pat

Hi Anonymous

I'm very sorry, but this is not enough information to answer your question. Do you know what kind of cancer? 8 of what? There are many numbers involved in cancer diagnosis and treatment, and they vary by illness and test.

I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help. If you can get more details, perhaps we can help. It would also be a good idea to just ask your friend what it means.

Thank you for writing.

Good Morning... Thanx for the reply... Well, all I know is that the number apparantly is her bloodcount. I think the cancer is in the stomach area... She battles to eat and if she does eat her stomach is swollen / bloated !!!! She just had new bloodtests done and according to the doctor has the count not gone up, which apparantly means itis not spreading... Hope this will help

Hello Again

There are many things that number could be. White count, red count, etc. This is why I say it's hard to know just what it is about. I'm glad it isn't spreading.

Stomach cancer can be quite difficult. I hope they found it early and can cure her. If you get further detail please let us know.
