Questions abound regarding dry humping, dry sex and dry intercourse. It is most often a question asked by girls and women, wanting to know if they can be pregnant when engaging in "dry sex".
The terms has been defined in many ways, depending on the person asking, and I wanted to break through the barriers and actually talk about the "embarrassing" aspects of what these terms actually mean.
What are you actually doing with your partner when you are doing anything "dry" in the sex-realm? Let's take the slang out of our questions, and talk about these taboo topics in the name of sexual health and wellness.
Sexual Health Quiz: Test Your Knowledge on this "Dry" Subject!
1. How would you describe/define the following terms?
- Dry Humping
- Dry Sex
- Dry Intercourse
2. What specific behaviors am I engaging in if I do any of the following?
- Dry Humping
- Dry Sex
- Dry Intercourse
3. Can you "get" pregnant from any of the following sexual activities?
- Dry Humping
- Dry Sex
- Dry Intercourse
4. Can you spread or contract an STI/STD from any of the following sexual behaviors? (STI/STD = sexually transmitted infections or diseases)
- Dry Humping
- Dry Sex
- Dry Intercourse
ANSWERS:
1. Dry= No Bodily Fluid Contact
The word "dry" means that there is no bodily fluid exchange or contact, including fluids or lubrication from the penis, vagina, anus or mouth. These specifically can include pre-ejaculatory fluid ("pre-cum"), ejaculatory fluid or "ejaculation" or "cum", vaginal lubrication or vaginal secretions.
"Dry humping" and "dry sex" can be summed up by using the term: "outercourse".
There is actually no such thing as "dry intercourse", as penetration can never be considered a "dry" activity as there is natural lubrication from your body that is considered a "bodily fluid".
2. Outercourse can include:
- massaging, touching
- masturbation
- body rubbing, humping or "going through motions" of sex while fully clothed (genitals are fully covered)...most commonly called "dry humping"
Outercourse can not include:
- penetration of penis into vagina, anus or mouth
- body rubbing while clothed, but some "slippage" of clothing (underwear, specifically)
- ejaculation near vagina, even while covered, with chance of semen spilling over clothing
3. No, Outercourse would not lead to pregnancy
As explained above, outercourse does not involve the contact or exchange of any bodily fluids, and therefore, would not create a risk for pregnancy
4. Yes, Outercourse may still carry the risk of spreading or contracting an STI/STD
The word "dry" is important when talking about pregnancy and STIs/STDs, as Outercourse is a Good Safer Sex Option, but is not 100% "safe".
Safer Sex is any sexual behavior that reduces your risk for infection or pregnancy. Although most STDs/STIs are spread through exchange of bodily fluids, some are transmitted from skin-to-skin contact (meaning: you don't have to have intercourse/penetration to become infected with an STD/STI). The skin-to-skin contact through outercourse can be a risk for STD/STI.
Lastly,
What are the Benefits of Outercourse (for two consenting adults?)
- Pleasurable form of sexual expression and intimacy
- Type of "safer sex" without need for contraception (for pregnancy prevention)
- Lower risk for contracting or spreading STIs or STDs (sexually transmitted infections or diseases)
- No risk for pregnancy
- It can be a sexual behavior that is pleasurable, exciting and not stress-inducing (from the point of view of women, wondering if they are pregnant)

Hello.
One night my girlfriend and I had outercourse, as per the definition in the above article. But after a while we were dry humping but only with our pants on. I wore jeans while she wore leggings. Eventually, I was in my underwear while she still wore her leggings. When I was about to ejaculate, I immediately adjusted my groin away from her vaginal area - I positioned myself slightly lower than her so that while I was ejaculating, my groin won't touch hers.
I can remember that I tried to touch her inner thighs to check if semen wet that part - and I can remember that it wasn't wet. She told me that she was also wet, but told me that it was from her.
Is there a need to worry? Thanks for the help.

Hello Anonymous,
There is no need to worry because both you were wearing pants the entire time.Your jeans "trapped" any ejaculated semen and her leggings acted as a barrier.

Ho, my Gf and I had outercourse rubbing our bodies together. When we finished, i noticed she had a little cum stain on her pants but did not pass her underwear. Will she become pregnant? Thank you

Hi Anonymous,
There was no risk for pregnancy if the semen did not pass through her underwear.

I started taking birth control pills 4 weeks ago, like a week and a half ago I stopped taking them and my period lasted 11 days (because of the pills I took for like 4 weeks) the night my period ended (Day 11 of my period) my boyfriend and I dry humped with clothing, he was in his boxers , and I had very thin underwear and thin pajama bottoms on, I THINK he did not ejaculate or precummed, we just rubbed against each other and I felt his penis through the fabric, when I went to the restroom my panties were wet, and I wiped myself, my question is, Am I at some risk of being pregnant? It's been like 5 days since our dry hump and my left lower abdomen hurts, why is that? The feeling's similar to the menstrual cramps, i've read the pain can be because I'm ovulating but I don't know. I'm very confused by everything I'm reading and it's come to a point where I can't sleep well anymore. I just want my period to come so I can be relaxed and happy. And If he did precum, am I at risk of being pregnant? We dry humped 5-6 days before my ovulating days

I know that you must get so many of these all the time but I thought that I would comment because I've been very anxious lately and maybe it'll help me sleep better at night. A couple weeks ago my boyfriend stayed the night at my house and we started messing around a bit. I was wearing soffe shorts and underwear and he was wearing shorts (I forget what kind, I think basketball shorts) and underwear. While we were laying down we were cuddling (or spooning I guess) and I could feel his penis in between my legs but we were both still fully clothed. I asked him if I could pregnant just from it being there and he told me no, I had to ask because I get very worried. So later on we ended up dry humping still in the spooning position, so all of the motions were mostly by my butt, even if they weren't I hope it's ok because we remained fully clothed the entire time. Throughout the night he rubbed my vagina (bare skin) with his hand and noticed I was soaked, but I've asked him multiple times if he precame or ejaculated during us dry humping and he's certain he didn't. So I guess maybe it was just me getting excited. He didn't touch his penis prior to touching my vagina. A few days or so later he came up again and all we do is play with each other using our hands, there's only been one other time he's rubbed me bare but all of the other times have been through my underwear. (He doesn't finger me because I'm not ready for that and I haven't tried to do it myself.) And I've touched him through his shorts and bare also, immediately after I'm done I make sure to wash my hands thoroughly because I get paranoid, pee, wash them again, then go to bed. And I've never touched myself directly after touching him without washing my hands, at least if I've ever felt something wet on my hands I won't even adjust my underwear. So I try to be extremely cautious about it. Yesterday he was playing with himself but swore he didn't precum and he touched my inner thigh and shorts, and his hands weren't wet. That's everything that we've done and we've never had sex or touched genitals without layers of clothing between, and I always try to be cautious when we masturbate each other. He's told me that he's never came around me (or precame) or touched himself then touched me and I haven't let him finish while playing with him because I do get very worried. My period is very irregular, and I can't remember the date for the last one I had (in May). And I have been very stressed lately and having weird dreams and since it's summer I've been anxious about school starting up again. In general I'm just a very worrisome, anxious, paranoid person when it comes to things like this. Now I feel like I'm just psyching myself out to make me believe I'm pregnant. I didn't get my period for June but this has happened to me before, and since I've been stressing so much I thought that my period is probably pushed back because of it. I started looking up pages like this to maybe calm me down but some of them have only made me question everything and worry more. I've taken sexual education and I'm very familiar with it, my anxiety just makes me think otherwise and warps everything. I'm just worried that maybe he did precum while we were dry humping or some other activity but he didn't feel it (even though he tells me he clearly can) or that I'm magically somehow pregnant since I haven't gotten my period yet. I'm sorry this is so long and I probably seem like I'm overreacting (I know I am) but thank you for taking the time to read this and respond back to me. It means so much. :)

Hey girl,
July 30, 2016 - 11:49pmI completely understand your concern. You are taking all the right precautions not to get pregnant. When you are dry humping, your boyfriend does precum and could finish. Just as you become wet, so does he. As long as his cum does not go inside your vagina and your parts are covered, it will not be possible for you to get pregnant. If you are this anxious, maybe take further actions to relieve your stress. Some options could be birth control to prevent pregnancy if you choose to become more intimate or waiting until you feel completely comfortable with these actions. Happy humping !

Hello Anonymous,
There was no risk for becoming pregnant because you were both fully clothed. Relax because stress will only further the delay.
