Questions abound regarding dry humping, dry sex and dry intercourse. It is most often a question asked by girls and women, wanting to know if they can be pregnant when engaging in "dry sex".
The terms has been defined in many ways, depending on the person asking, and I wanted to break through the barriers and actually talk about the "embarrassing" aspects of what these terms actually mean.

Sexual Health Quiz: Test Your Knowledge on this "Dry" Subject!
1. How would you describe/define the following terms?
- Dry Humping
- Dry Sex
- Dry Intercourse
2. What specific behaviors am I engaging in if I do any of the following?
- Dry Humping
- Dry Sex
- Dry Intercourse
3. Can you "get" pregnant from any of the following sexual activities?
- Dry Humping
- Dry Sex
- Dry Intercourse
4. Can you spread or contract an STI/STD from any of the following sexual behaviors? (STI/STD = sexually transmitted infections or diseases)
- Dry Humping
- Dry Sex
- Dry Intercourse
ANSWERS:
1. Dry= No Bodily Fluid Contact
The word "dry" means that there is no bodily fluid exchange or contact, including fluids or lubrication from the penis, vagina, anus or mouth. These specifically can include pre-ejaculatory fluid ("pre-cum"), ejaculatory fluid or "ejaculation" or "cum", vaginal lubrication or vaginal secretions.
"Dry humping" and "dry sex" can be summed up by using the term: "outercourse".
There is actually no such thing as "dry intercourse", as penetration can never be considered a "dry" activity as there is natural lubrication from your body that is considered a "bodily fluid".
2. Outercourse can include:
- massaging, touching
- masturbation
- body rubbing, humping or "going through motions" of sex while fully clothed (genitals are fully covered)...most commonly called "dry humping"
Outercourse can not include:
- penetration of penis into vagina, anus or mouth
- body rubbing while clothed, but some "slippage" of clothing (underwear, specifically)
- ejaculation near vagina, even while covered, with chance of semen spilling over clothing
3. No, Outercourse would not lead to pregnancy
As explained above, outercourse does not involve the contact or exchange of any bodily fluids, and therefore, would not create a risk for pregnancy
4. Yes, Outercourse may still carry the risk of spreading or contracting an STI/STD
The word "dry" is important when talking about pregnancy and STIs/STDs, as Outercourse is a Good Safer Sex Option, but is not 100% "safe".
Safer Sex is any sexual behavior that reduces your risk for infection or pregnancy. Although most STDs/STIs are spread through exchange of bodily fluids, some are transmitted from skin-to-skin contact (meaning: you don't have to have intercourse/penetration to become infected with an STD/STI). The skin-to-skin contact through outercourse can be a risk for STD/STI.
Lastly,
What are the Benefits of Outercourse (for two consenting adults?)
- Pleasurable form of sexual expression and intimacy
- Type of "safer sex" without need for contraception (for pregnancy prevention)
- Lower risk for contracting or spreading STIs or STDs (sexually transmitted infections or diseases)
- No risk for pregnancy
- It can be a sexual behavior that is pleasurable, exciting and not stress-inducing (from the point of view of women, wondering if they are pregnant)

Hello Missgal,
Begin by taking a home pregnancy test. Test in the morning and use the first urine of the day. Next step depends on the test result.

Hey, I just wanted to say thank you for your help and all. My period came almost 2 weeks late but it came and this is one of the best things that have ever happened to me considering how depressed I was waiting for my period, fearing that I might be pregnant. Now I've learned my lesson, we shouldn't mess with this kind of things and I wish that no unwanted pregnancy would ever occur again to anyone, that every girl gets her period and that the world would be at peace. I love you all!

Me and my boyfriend were both virgins and have been trying to get the right way to have sex. Till this day we can't seem to get it right. And I feel it's mostly my fault. Every time it's partly in I am in such pain.. I feel tremendous pressure and a burning type of sensation which I cannot ignore. The very last time we tried he managed to put most of it in and the pressure little by little seemed to go away but then I felt the need to go to the bathroom. The pain still remained. Idk what to do. Maybe I am not ready to have sex I have to admit that. I've always been so scared of how much it would hurt but I just didn't figure it would be this bad and last this long. I thought that it would take some time for a girl to get used to it and I know it depends on my body but I can't help but think that my body is rejecting any type of sexual activity bc I'm not ready even though I thought I was

Hello there,
Me and my girlfriend dry humped on June 25th (we're both virgin and didn't have real sex), I wore underwear and soccer pants and she's on her underwear, we were hugging, deep kissing and did some sex motions on my bed then I ejaculated on my shorts, but no direct contact between my penis and her vagina because we're still wore clothes.
but she's stressed out and didn't get her period until now (almost 3 weeks late).
can sperm through my pants to her underwear then enter her vagina in this case? is she pregnant? help me I'm really scared
thank you in advance

my friend called me worried, she wants to wait until she's married to have sex, but her and her boyfriend were "dry humping" with her having leggings and undergarments on, and him having cotton shorts on and it began to hurt her at a certain point, and her being a virgin is there any way this "dry humping" she had can cause her not to be a virgin?

I know this might be answered already many times but about 3 weeks ago me and my bf were dry humping with cloth on. He had swimshorts and boxers and i have underwear and leggings. What is worrying me is that i got my period but its very light and i dont know if its my period or implantation bleeding and i keep reading about it so its stressing me out.

Hello Jan119,
This would only be implantation if you conceived by having unprotected vaginal intercourse.
Implantation is scanty pink or brown vaginal discharge. It is spotting, does not increase to a flow and lasts only a day or two.
If you are concerned that you might be pregnant, take a home pregnancy test or consult your physician who can order a blood pregnancy test.

Hello there, my girlfriend and I are both 20. We were dry humping about a month ago. I did not wear underwear but I did have basketball shorts, and she wore thin shorts and undergarments. We dry humped and stopped after a few minutes and I did not ejaculate however there were small precum stains on my shorts. She also was a little wet on her undergarments but not her shorts. 2 weeks later she had her period, so we were relieved and we decided to be responsible and not dry hump again ever since we clearly were not ready for such activities.
July 16, 2015 - 2:44pmHowever, this past 2 weeks she had episodic stomach cramps, she indicated it felt like her uterus and also a slight back pain for the first time. She also felt a little nauseous for a short amount of time in the late afternoons. She was fine this whole week until she woke up suddenly feeling nauseous again with a bad stomach ache.
She's had anxiety and has a long history of it. She is also leaving for college soon this summer up north several hours away so she thinks it may be stress. However, in my mind I am afraid that these symptoms may be indicating that she might be pregnant, although her monthly period is only 2 weeks away from now. Based on this information could she be?
