Sexual Health Quiz: Test Your Knowledge on this "Dry" Subject!
1. How would you describe/define the following terms?
- Dry Humping
- Dry Sex
- Dry Intercourse
2. What specific behaviors am I engaging in if I do any of the following?
- Dry Humping
- Dry Sex
- Dry Intercourse
3. Can you "get" pregnant from any of the following sexual activities?
- Dry Humping
- Dry Sex
- Dry Intercourse
4. Can you spread or contract an STI/STD from any of the following sexual behaviors? (STI/STD = sexually transmitted infections or diseases)
- Dry Humping
- Dry Sex
- Dry Intercourse
ANSWERS:
1. Dry= No Bodily Fluid Contact
The word "dry" means that there is no bodily fluid exchange or contact, including fluids or lubrication from the penis, vagina, anus or mouth. These specifically can include pre-ejaculatory fluid ("pre-cum"), ejaculatory fluid or "ejaculation" or "cum", vaginal lubrication or vaginal secretions.
"Dry humping" and "dry sex" can be summed up by using the term: "outercourse".
There is actually no such thing as "dry intercourse", as penetration can never be considered a "dry" activity as there is natural lubrication from your body that is considered a "bodily fluid".
2. Outercourse can include:
- massaging, touching
- masturbation
- body rubbing, humping or "going through motions" of sex while fully clothed (genitals are fully covered)...most commonly called "dry humping"
Outercourse can not include:
- penetration of penis into vagina, anus or mouth
- body rubbing while clothed, but some "slippage" of clothing (underwear, specifically)
- ejaculation near vagina, even while covered, with chance of semen spilling over clothing
3. No, Outercourse would not lead to pregnancy
As explained above, outercourse does not involve the contact or exchange of any bodily fluids, and therefore, would not create a risk for pregnancy
4. Yes, Outercourse may still carry the risk of spreading or contracting an STI/STD
The word "dry" is important when talking about pregnancy and STIs/STDs, as Outercourse is a Good Safer Sex Option, but is not 100% "safe".
Safer Sex is any sexual behavior that reduces your risk for infection or pregnancy. Although most STDs/STIs are spread through exchange of bodily fluids, some are transmitted from skin-to-skin contact (meaning: you don't have to have intercourse/penetration to become infected with an STD/STI). The skin-to-skin contact through outercourse can be a risk for STD/STI.
Lastly,
What are the Benefits of Outercourse (for two consenting adults?)
- Pleasurable form of sexual expression and intimacy
- Type of "safer sex" without need for contraception (for pregnancy prevention)
- Lower risk for contracting or spreading STIs or STDs (sexually transmitted infections or diseases)
- No risk for pregnancy
- It can be a sexual behavior that is pleasurable, exciting and not stress-inducing (from the point of view of women, wondering if they are pregnant)

Hi! If my boyfriend completely naked rubs his penis against my vagina imitating penetration, but my vagina is covered by my underwear, is it also dry sex? And is it free of pregnancy risk?

I'm 14 almost 15 and me and my boyfriend have started having dry sex. t was fine when t wasn't very often but we now do it rather frequently and sometimes the friction can make me rather sore. The last time we did it I felt a little uncomfortable for the rest of the day and the next morning I had really thick and yellow discharger. Is this normal? Should I be concerned? Also can we get in trouble for this because we are underaged. P.S. we have both agreed we don't want to lose our virginity until we are at least 18 and we don't want to take our relationship any further for at least a year.

Hello Anonymous,
Thank you for coming to us with your question.
The change in vaginal discharge is nothing to worry about. Sexual arousal that you experienced during dry sex led to an increase and the slight change in your normal discharge. Was it more of an off white color?
It is normal for the color, texture, and amount of vaginal discharge to vary throughout your menstrual cycle. Normal vaginal discharge can vary somewhat in texture and color. It can be somewhat thin, sticky, and elastic or thick and gooey. It should be clear, white, or off-white in color.
Friction is causing you to have soreness. I would think wearing tight fitting jeans would increase friction and increase the soreness that you feel afterwards.
I do not think dry sex between two minors is illegal. But, I am very concerned that you are so young. Please do not go any further until you are more mature and ready for sexual intimacy. Please demand that your partner always wear a condom. Consider receiving the HPV vaccine, if you have not already been immunized. Lastly, find a type of birth control that works for you and use it consistently. That is the mother in me speaking to you:)

Me and my guy were dry humping,we were fully clothed(undergarments and pant-skirt) I was on top of him while he was sitting and am a little worried because since I was on top and was wearing a skirt it means that when we were dry humping I was in my undergarments while he was fully clothed, his jeans were dark so I dont know if he cum but I was wet am not sure if I could get pregnant or not because of that.

You're not pregnant. Sometimes the stress and anxiety of thinking you might be pregnant can delay your period. If you're not even sure that semen went to your vaginal opening, than it definably didn't end up far up enough in your vagina. Semen typically needs to be placed at the top of the cervix.

Me and my boyfriend had dry sex a few days before I was suppose to start my period, both of us fully clothed (him in shirt, underwear, and kaki like shorts and me in shirt, panties, and jeans). He ejaculated then laid ontop of me for a few minutes. Im not sure if he was wet on the outside or not, but say he was and I didnt change clothes for about 7-8 hours after. I haven't started my period yet. I'm about 11 days late. Is there any possibility of pregnancy? Reading all these post, I think the answer is no, but I wanted to get an answer personally after saying my situation. Thanks in advance!
