Shay Pausa interviews Alexa VonTobel at the 2010 Women's Conference on ways to become financially aware when investing in health insurance.

Shay Pausa:
Welcome to EmpowHER Live this morning. I am Shay Pausa and I am so excited to be with this young lady. This is Alexa VonTobel and I saw her at Gail King’s booth and let me just say, she said “You are Suzy Orman 2.0,” and you are; you are. Thank you for being with us.

Alexa VonTobel:
Thank you so much for having me this morning.

Shay Pausa:
Now we are very strong believers that money and health are very tied together because let’s face it, when you don’t have it you are stressed out and it causes all kinds of physical symptoms and so how can we teach women, not just the parts about, you know, balancing your checkbook and making all these financial decisions, but healthcare as well? What are your thoughts on that?

Alexa VonTobel:
So at the end of the day you have to focus on yourself. You have to make sure that you can take care of yourself to be your best self, which means you need to be comfortable with your money. You need to understand things like your health benefits to make sure that you can actually be healthy.

You want to make sure that you understand things like your health benefits and insurance. It’s really important to make sure that you understand how your health benefit work because it’s one of the biggest black holes you can fall into is not having the right health insurance and a catastrophe happening.

Shay Pausa:
It’s true; yeah, it’s one of the biggest reasons for bankruptcy for women, yeah.

Alexa VonTobel:
That’s exactly right, so we consider one of the six financial black holes that you can fall into so know that understanding insurance is not only critical to your health but it is critical to your financial health and it is a major priority and you just sit down, you need to actually understand your health benefits, ask a hundred questions if you have to but make sure you understand everything.

Shay Pausa:
Yeah, now you are a young woman – 26?

Alexa VonTobel:
I just turned 27.

Shay Pausa:
27 - well happy birthday. So what about for women? What’s your thoughts about someone who is little bit older, who actually hasn’t learned this when they should have. They didn’t learned this at 26.

Alexa VonTobel:
It doesn’t matter how old you are; the time is now. We are going through one of the worst recessions in 81 years, right? Everyone is feeling hit. If you have money you are still feeling a hit because your money is half of what it used to be and if you don’t have money it’s a really scaring and painful time and so we are all banding together and understanding our finances.

There is a fundamental shift that’s happening in the economy. It is sign for all of us to recognize it. Money affects every part of your life and you just need to be thoughtful about every single one of those decisions.

Shay Pausa:
Very good. As I mentioned before, Alexa VonTobel, she is the lady to watch with LearnVest and really stressing the importance of being financially and healthy physically all the way around. Thank you so much for being with us.

Alexa VonTobel:
Thank you so much. I appreciate it.

Shay Pausa:
It’s a pleasure.
