Alice discusses how women can benefit from osteoporosis support groups.

Alice:
I began an osteoporosis support group for the National Osteoporosis Foundation in my local community. However, I find that with a support group, many women will come in, they have just been diagnosed. They want to learn everything they can and they might come back a second visit but then they don’t come back again. So I try to give everything I possibly can on that first visit thinking that might be the only time I see them.

I have had women, however, from all over the world, e-mail me their problems with osteoporosis and I have, on my own, sent them everything on information that I have and mailed it to them to give them the information because there is no group in their community or they are not familiar with anything or where can I go for more help? My doctor is just a small town doctor, who can help me more? What I find with support groups specifically, it’s a one or two time visit with those individuals and then they go into denial. I have it. I have read about it.

Sometimes they come back a year later because now they have had a broken bone and reality has hit them a little more, but it’s like I have said earlier that denial that I went through too, they go through.
