Dr. Dugoua explains how women can advocate for themselves before becoming pregnant.

Dr. Dugoua:
I am Dr. Jean-Jacques Dugoua. I am affectionately known as Dr. JJ. I am a naturopathic doctor and a researcher. I am also completing a Ph.D. at the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Toronto, and I am a researcher at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Ontario.

The majority of pregnancies, about 50 percent of pregnancies, are unplanned. The majority of women will be coming off the birth control pill which depletes a number of B vitamins including folic acid. So any woman who plans on conceiving, I would recommend definitely to take a B Complex that’s high in folic acid to begin with before they seriously conceive.

In terms of time before conception, how much time they should take the B vitamin before, I would say probably about three or six months depending on the absorption to kind of re-load their levels.
