Dr. Akl recalls the possible long-term complications that can arise when a urinary tract infection (UTI) is left untreated and explains how a woman can prevent UTIs.

Dr. Akl:
One of the complications of urinary tract infection is extension into the kidneys, a condition called pyelonephritis, which can causes sepsis, and even can, which is a potentially dangerous condition and can cause even death.

Urinary tract infections can be prevented by proper vulvovaginal hygiene for example, washing the vulvar and vaginal area before and after sexual intercourse and bowel movements, increase the intake of fluids, proper treatment of a current urinary tract infection to prevent recurrence based on appropriate culture and sensitivity of the urine.

In some cases the physician might place the patient on a suppressive antibiotic therapy in cases of recurrent urinary tract infection to prevent recurrence for some period of time.
