In this edition of EmpowHER's "HER Health Minute" Missy Anderson discusses some of the reasons why women may experience weight gain after they turn age 40.

Missy: Hi, I am Missy Anderson and this is HER Health Minute. Why do women gain weight after age 40?

It may not be all about diet and exercise. A couple of factors may include a hormone imbalance, a thyroid condition or your medications such as Prednisone, some antidepressants and even antacids.

Also a woman’s metabolism starts to slow in her 30s and 40s. Diet and exercise are still key components for effective long-lasting weight control. However, choose a diet high in fiber, fruits, vegetables and whole grains, eliminate bad fats, and eat lean proteins. And find an exercise that you will enjoy. Exercise burns calories and fat and builds muscle.

One of my favorite options is turning up the music and dancing. Dancing, like walking, doesn’t require equipment or gym memberships and it’s fun. The right diet and exercise program will not only contribute to weight loss but can have a big effect on your overall health and well-being.
