Dr. Horton describes the causes of ankle arthritis.
Dr. Horton:
Well, typically when people get arthritis of the ankle it’s from one of three major areas. The most common is post-traumatic arthritis, a person who has had a fracture or dislocation or chronic instability of their ankle over time and then their joint has deteriorated. Another group is idiopathic arthritis or osteoarthritis in which a cause is not readily identified, but occurs slowly over time. And then the third category would be an inflammatory type of arthritis such as a rheumatic arthritis.
