Dr. Harness:

The latest research on breast cancer is a huge question, and here’s what I think is the fair answer to that. There is so much going on in the research labs right now that the takeaway message for patients is we want to make sure they have the absolute state-of-the-art care as we understand it today, excuse me, so that they get well down the road as new research catches up with them, particularly if they were to have a recurrence of the cancer down the road.

It is monumental, the amount of research going on on breast cancer, related to the genome project, related to high speed computers, related to better molecular analysis. It’s staggering what’s going on. The goal is to have targeted therapies, a drug like Herceptin which goes against HER2/neu-positive breast cancers, targeted having great impact. We need 20 or 30 more drugs like that for all the different kinds of breast cancers.
