41 days since my last period

I'm 27, I have 3 kids and I've always had my periods between 27-31 days apart. It's now day 41 and i've taken 2 HPT's and both neg. My husband and I always use condoms and none have broken. I don't think I'm pregnant, but can't figure out why I'm so late. My period came on Aug 27, 2010 then on Sept 29, 2010. It was 33 days which put me a couple days late, then I didn't get another one until Nov 6, 2010. It was 38 days between my periods. I started going back to school in August and I've been a little more stressed out trying to take care of my kids and attend college full-time. Could stress make my cycles change? I'm just wondering why my periods keep getting later every month??

Hi mommyof3,
You may want to ask your doctor's office, but I'm pretty sure from personal experience you may have passed a mass/cyst of some sort. It can be unnerving, but nothing to be concerned of. If it happens again, call your doctor to ask what they suggest. It likely had nothing to do with the pill, but as mentioned, if you're concerned or have more symptoms, call your doctor.

Good luck, and let us know how you are doing.

Just to update, I finally had my appt with my obgyn. She thinks i'm just having really bad dysmenorrhea and put me on birth control. I guess she knows what she's talking about. But, four days before my appt I had some sharp stabbing pelvic and abdominal pains. The next day, the pains came again and this time they were so bad that I wanted to just die. The pains lasted about an hour and it was indescribable. For the next two days after that, I couldn't hardly walk because i was sore from the pain that i had. I told her all this and she said I was probably just having really bad menstrual cramps. One: I'm not on my period. Two: It's been 4 weeks since my last period, so not sure if i was ovulating or not. Three: I still haven't started and if I was having cramps bc i was fixing to start, then where's my period. I started my pills that day and I'm hoping that it straightens things out.

Well, i finally started this morning. I don't know if it will be normal or not considering it was so late. So far it's still very light. I will probably just wait until Jan to see my obgyn since I started now. I'll keep you updated on how things are going. Thanks.

You're very welcome, that's what we're here for. You may want to keep tracking what's going on, so you can explain it all to your doctor in January. Glad the initial concern seems to have resolved itself. At your well woman visit, your doctor can check to see if there is any physical/medical reason why your period was irregular this month.
Take care, and happy holidays~

Hi mommyof3,
Thank you for your question and for finding EmpowHER.
Stress can have an affect on your menstrual cycle. Other changes that can affect it include sickness, poor nutrition, excessive exercise, and medications. It may be a good idea to call your gynecologist or family doctor's office and explain to them what's happening so they can recommend how to proceed.
It's possible you may have ovarian cysts, or something similar that's causing your cycles to be disrupted, or it could be stress like you said. Doctors typically want to see you if you haven't had a period for 90days, but if you are concerned, don't be shy about calling sooner to find out what could be going on.
Here is an article that may be beneficial to help you advocate for your health with your doctor:
No Cycle or Missed Cycle, What Can it Mean?
Good luck and let us know what you find out.

I have an appt with my obgyn but it's not for another month. It's been 44 days now and still no period. I've never been this late unless i was pregnant. But all the HPT's say negative. I know stress can cause you to be late, but wow. I was pretty stressed out in Oct. because my husband worked alot of overtime and I had to struggle to get to school and get my homework done all the time, but I've had a period since then. I wouldn't say that I was really stressed in Nov and now I'm so late, it just doesn't make sense to me. I forgot to mention that on Nov 30th, 24 days after my last period, I went to the bathroom and when i wiped there was a little bit of bloody discharge. I thought that maybe i was gonna start so I put a tampon in. When i took it out later that day, there was nothing on it. I've NEVER had any kind of breakthrough bleeding in my life. Just confused and wish I could see my doc now!

Hi anonymous,
Is the appointment you have next month for this condition? Have you explained all this to the nurse at your doctor's office? I would ask for an earlier appointment. Is there another doctor in the practice you can see if your doctor isn't available? If you tell them you don't want to wait until your scheduled appointment next month, they may be able to get you in sooner. Many doctor's offices hold appointments for more urgent cases. If they aren't available, do you have an urgent care (not the emergency room) facility in your area you can go to to get checked out if your doctor's office isn't available until next month? They may want to run some tests like a blood test, and/or pelvic exam or sonogram to see what could be going on.
Let us know what you find out.

When i called to make the appt i told her at that time i was 39 days since my last period. i told her my periods had become very erratic and I would like to get checked out to see what's going on. The nurse told me that i was due for my yearly papsmear in Jan. She said in order for my insurance to pay for the pap I had to wait at least a year and a day. So, I can't go until Jan 18th. She also told me with the holidays coming up I wouldn't be able to get in until Jan anyways. There are urgent care center's nearby, but everytime I go to one of those, they tell me if I have a primary doctor it would be best to go to them since they already know my history. With a matter of this nature, I would feel more comfortable seeing my regular obgyn since she's seen me through all 3 of my pregnancy and deliveries and my yearly exams. I'm going to try to contact them and see if there's any way they can squeeze me in sometime very soon. I will keep you updated.

I agree, there's nothing wrong with having them check you out for this primary condition you are concerned about now, then go back on Jan. 18th for your annual exam/pap. I wouldn't want to wait either. Good luck, and let us know what happens.
