Another "Pregnant? or just Stress-induced missed period?" question

The start of my most recent period was on Feb 26 - projected ovulation date being March 14, projected next period March 28 (via MyMonthlyCycles, where I have been keeping track of my period for 1 year). Average cycle - 30 days.

We had protected intercourse on March 3 and 24. The condom didn't break; slipped down maybe an inch but we pushed it right back up.

Now my period is 3 or 4 days late (depending if you count the 28th), with no usual signs of cramping etc that I normally get. Took two HPT's and both came out negative. Discharge looks normal, no tenderness of breasts or anything. I have had a little bit of an upset stomach but I think I may just be getting sick - I am under quite a bit of stress.

I know it's unlikely that I am pregnant, but I am paranoid since I can't afford to have a child right now. I have heard that stress really can throw off a regular period (I have been regular for 8 years now), but I have a hard time believing it since I am so paranoid... help? I don't know what's wrong with me!

Have a GYNO appt coming up in a month, but I'm the type of person who likes to know without going to the doc! It sure would be nice if my period would come!

Hi Anonymous,
Thanks for your question and for finding EmpowHER. If the pregnancy tests are negative, you shouldn't worry. You may want to wait another week. If you don't get your period and are concerned, you can take another pregnancy test. Gynecologists typically want to see you if you miss three periods (that's no period for 90 days), but if you're concerned, don't be shy about calling to make sure your health is maintained.

Hi,

I was hoping someone could help me with what I should do next..
My period is late (it's irregular; and over the last year I've been tracking it, it's run from from 21 days to 35 days, but over the past few months it's settled on 30-31 days). My last period started on Oct 22nd. I took a home pregnancy test on Nov. 27, and it was negative. I don't think I have any symptoms of pregnancy (though I haven't been sleeping well because I'm stressed out about my period being late) or anything like that.

I had sex with a condom on Nov. 14, but we noticed afterwards that the sperm had leaked backwards out of the base of the condom back onto him (since he was lying down).

I don't think I've been under any particular stress or anything recently. The only change this month has been that I've started taking a multivitamin supplement (I started around the beginning of November). Would this affect anything?

So basically, I was wondering - what should I do next? I was planning on taking another home pregnancy test in a few days if my period still hasn't started. If it's negative again and I still don't have my period, should I book an appointment with a doctor to get a blood test or get it checked out?

Thanks!

Like all anonymous posters here, I am paranoid that I may be pregnant. Although I am emotionally prepared to raise a child, I am not financially prepared (I'm in my second year of law school, so I'm actually in a lot of debt thanks to government loans) and so the timing is rather undesirable. I just became sexually active in June, and did not have sexual intercourse on a regular basis until this past month. The sex, stupidly on my part, has been unprotected (he never ejaculated in me or around my vagina). My last period began on the evening of the 16th of October. I have had sex on the 20th, the 22nd, and the 29th of October, as well as the 9th of November. I took Next Choice on the 11th of November because I was feeling worried after the intercourse on the 9th. While my period has never been regular (and has been delayed because of both physical [I've had periods stop right in the middle when I've suddenly been sick with a cold or the flu] and emotional stress, ergo, trying to track it in the past has been pointless), I have never completely skipped over one. I have been experiencing what are, for me, tell-tale signs that my period is due. I am terrified to get a pregnancy test because I don't want to have my worst fears confirmed (ironic, considering that it would probably bring me peace of mind). The whole ordeal has made me an absolute emotional wreck (trying to figure out how the heck I'd be able to afford having a kid), and I really don't have anyone to lean on for emotional support. Thanks in advance for any and all responses.

Anon - Hopefully your tell tale signs are actually telling the tale you want, and your period will come soon. It might be helpful to have more information on how emergency contraceptives work, which you will find in this article. https://www.empowher.com/sex-amp-relationships/content/emergency-contraception-update-2010

Since you may be now thinking about moving to some form of birth control, the following article provides a lot of helpful information: https://www.empowher.com/reproductive-system/content/birth-control-what-works-what-doesn-t-and-what-s-best-you?page=0%2C0

Good luck! Pat

Well, I'm happy to report that I've had not one but 2 periods since my freak-out back in mid-November (and I'm back to abstaining from sexual intercourse because I now realize how unprepared I am for a baby and I don't want to take any chances, not even a 1% chance). The first one came on Thanksgiving Day, when I was more focused on getting home and going to my friend's wedding the next day rather than on whether I may or may not be pregnant.

I guess it's just another story of mind over matter. I've learned to not psych myself out over being pregnant because if you obsess over it like I was, then your body will either a) be too stressed to function properly or b) start prepping itself for the fertilized egg (which includes holding onto that menstrual lining).

Hi Anonymous,

If you took a pregnancy test and it was negative, you should be in the clear for pregnancy. If you still are missing your period in another week, try another test. If you already have irregular periods, this may just be common for you to miss periods as I am the same way. Have you ever thought about birth control to try and maintain a normal period?

Birth control, such as the Pill, is a great way to regulate your period and also protect you from possible pregnancy scares. As there are so many reasons to miss your period, it is hard to pin point your specific reasoning. Stress, exercise, sometimes for no apparent reason at all, women will miss periods and not be pregnant.

Please keep us updated and let us know if you have any further questions. Good luck!

Hi,
I am 23. My period is about 10 days late. My last period was on 18th august. and now is 25th sept. I have had unprotected sex on 16th september since i thaught i am going to have the period cause of cramps and stuff. Now, it's 25th and I still don't have it yet. I took one pregnancy test 2 days ago and it came out negative. Could it be due to stress?? I was quite stressful during 2nd week and 3rd week of sept due to my relationship. and I am now so worried about my period being late. What could be the reason? my periods are usually irregular but I can't help but to worry about it everytime i am late. :(
