I am a 30 year old who has always had regular periods. Last month (January), my period was 4 days late, very light, and lasted a few extra days. It was weird, but I figured it was related to some stressful things I was dealing with. My next period is due on February 20, but yesterday, I had some bleeding after going to the bathroom. Today, I am still having some brown discharge. I don't feel like I'm getting my period (I usually have sore breasts and cramps a few days before hand, but am not experiencing any of these normal symptoms). Is it normal to experience early bleeding every once in a while? What could cause this?
NOTE: I am not sexually active, so no chance of pregnancy. Am not taking any hormone / birth control pills, either.
I tend to really worry about health issues, so I'm not sure if I'm blowing this out of proportion. Either way, my body is acting differently and it's really stressing me out!

Hi Renee,
February 17, 2011 - 9:45amSounds like you are just having an irregular period. Nothing to worry about. Just keep track of your cycle, and if it's irregular a few months in a row, you can ask your doctor again about it to see if they want to check to make sure everything is as it should be in your reproductive system. Did you get a chance to read those articles? I know it can be unsettling and confusing when your period isn't as you expect it to be.

Hi Anonymous,
February 15, 2011 - 9:32amThanks for you question and for finding EmpowHER. It is completely normal for your period to be weird now-and-again (within reason). You definitely may want to keep track of these things in a written or electronic notepad so you can relay them to a medical professional effectively in the event you need to see a doctor. If you are really concerned, you may want to give your doctor a call and see what they say. Good luck, and let us know how you're doing.

Thanks for your reply, Christine! So, I started spotting last Monday (as mentioned in my original post). This continued through Tuesday. Wednesday, the flow got a little bit heavier, to the point I needed to wear a pad. It pretty much seemed like day 1 of my period. Today (Thursday) is the same. Nothing came out during the night. The flow is not increasing - still pretty light, but enough to need protection. It's red in color (not brown anymore). Is this spotting, still? Or would this be considered my period? Another weird this is that I had no period symptoms, as usual (no sore breasts, no cramps, etc). I don't feel like I'm having my period, yet I am bleeding. So, I guess I'd like some input as to whether my current flow should be considered spotting, or a period. My actual period due date would be this Saturday. I called my dr. and they told me to monitor it, but I can't help but worry. Thanks for your input!
