I drink a lot of milk and consume many diary products. Can it cause acne breakouts?

Hi Erin

Thanks for this question!

There are so many stories about what cause acne (chocolate! pizza! late nights!).

Acne is caused (for the most part) by bacteria and hormones. There may be other causes like insulin resistance - studies never seem to be conclusive on this topic.

Dairy, unfortunately, contains a lot of hormones these days. The hormones are shoved into cattle to make them produce more milk and these hormones don't disappear once they arrive in your milk carton!

There is nothing definitive that I can find that dairy does actually lead to acne but the above hormone explanation is believed by many who on to have clearer skin when they give up dairy.

To see if it works for you, give up dairy for a month. I know that can be very hard for dairy lovers! You can find calcium in other foods like kale, broccoli, chickpeas, almonds and walnuts.

Read more about calcium here:

If you try a dairy free plan, will you let us know how it goes?
